When an insatiable great white shark terrorizes the townspeople of Amity Island, the police chief, an oceanographer and a grizzled shark hunter seek to destroy the blood-thirsty beast.
The dog Pippin in JAWS does die playing fetch in the water. You don't see him die but you see his stick and the missing dog. Let's just say he ran away.
While the animal cruelty towards the shark was simulated, the following involved abuse/death of actual animals:
1)The production flew in a 13-foot tiger shark caught off the coast of Florida to use for the scene where the townspeople string up a shark on the dock thought to be the shark.
2)The production had been working for a week, trying to get a shark to attack the cage, but sharks don’t normally do that. Finally, one day, a shark came over and got its nose stuck in a bridle. Sharks go crazy when they are trapped. The shark went berserk and they used that footage (with an empty cage), because it looked as if the shark were attacking the cage.
Body horror typically refers to transformations or mutation of the human body. While various limbs and body parts are shown I wouldn't consider any of it body horror.
Towards the end of the movie, the shark bites a characters legs and there is an audible snap. I don’t have the timestamp for it but he starts sliding towards the gaping mouth of the shark so it should be pretty clear before it actually happens so you can skip! 👍
While not used on a human being, the character of Hooper does attempt to inject the shark with poison but fails to do so. The syringe is only on screen for maybe 4 seconds total.
YES. during the town hall type scene, quint suddenly drags his nails across a chalkboard for about 20 seconds. it really made me wince, so look out for that
hooper does like a tame version of a middle finger to quint’s back. quint swears a lot in one scene and brody’s wife is upset by this. quint says something about “bow-legged women,” etc.
Multiple shots of bloody water, severed limbs, people being bitten and/or eaten by the title character, several corpses, giant bloody explosion at the end. A movie with this much blood & gore in it today would be rated R, but the seventies were different.
YES! the first death, the girl is dragged underwater and drowns/is eaten by the shark. she struggles a lot and says things like “im going to die,” it’s upsetting. brody mentions his fear of drowning. the first 3 deaths could be seen as drowning deaths, although they are also eaten by the shark.
