When an insatiable great white shark terrorizes the townspeople of Amity Island, the police chief, an oceanographer and a grizzled shark hunter seek to destroy the blood-thirsty beast.
This movie contains 43 potentially triggering events.
The dog Pippin in JAWS does die playing fetch in the water. You don't see him die but you see his stick and the missing dog. Let's just say he ran away.
Towards the start of the film, people try and convince the main character there’s not actually a shark and that he’s making it up/there’s nothing to worry about
mentioned earlier in the movie that the protagonist was kicked out of the new york police department for being alcoholic he is later seen with quint and Hooper drunk in the second act of the film
While the animal cruelty towards the shark was simulated, the following involved abuse/death of actual animals:
1)The production flew in a 13-foot tiger shark caught off the coast of Florida to use for the scene where the townspeople string up a shark on the dock thought to be the shark.
2)The production had been working for a week, trying to get a shark to attack the cage, but sharks don’t normally do that. Finally, one day, a shark came over and got its nose stuck in a bridle. Sharks go crazy when they are trapped. The shark went berserk and they used that footage (with an empty cage), because it looked as if the shark were attacking the cage.
Towards the end of the movie, the shark bites a characters legs and there is an audible snap. I don’t have the timestamp for it but he starts sliding towards the gaping mouth of the shark so it should be pretty clear before it actually happens so you can skip! 👍
there is no specific finger or toe mutilation shown. quint does describe that he has “see fingers ripped off at the knuckle”, which made me wince at the thought.
In one scene a boat gets flooded and tipped… it was at an angle where a person slipped and slid down to our not so friendly shark antagonist, let’s just say it did not end well for that guy so technically yes. It’s quite horrifying!
there is a LOT of blood, though it looks fake. gruesome depictions of shark attacks, both fake and there are pictures shown of real shark attack victims, and they are gross.
For anyone who doesn't know what the raft scene is, a boy is playing in the water on an inflatable raft. The shark attacks him from below and the boy is seen being dragged a bit in bloody water before being dragged under. There is a lot of blood and you see the boy both as he is attacked both above and below the water.
So many "no's" here? Did everyone forget that Brody's son is sent to the hospital after the beach scene where the shark enters "the pond" because of shock?
everybody panics when the second victim is eaten and they all flee to shore, trampling others in the process. brody is visibly distressed when on the boat because he hates water and has a fear of drowning. the boys in “the pond” panic when the shark comes right toward them. victims panic while they are pursued and eaten, hooper jumps and screams underwater when the severed head pops out, he also is definitely freaking out when he is in the shark cage and the shark is breaking it apart. lots of panic in this movie
Quint tells a story about being on the USS Indianapolis, a ship that sank after being hit by a submarine. Most of the men drowned or were eaten by sharks; Quint survived. It likely left him with PTSD and you can see some subtle signs of it as he is telling the story.
hooper does like a tame version of a middle finger to quint’s back. quint swears a lot in one scene and brody’s wife is upset by this. quint says something about “bow-legged women,” etc.
YES! the first death, the girl is dragged underwater and drowns/is eaten by the shark. she struggles a lot and says things like “im going to die,” it’s upsetting. brody mentions his fear of drowning. the first 3 deaths could be seen as drowning deaths, although they are also eaten by the shark.
