The Ancient Magus' Bride: Those Awaiting a Star

TV Show • 2016 • Animation

Report
A prequel to the manga The Ancient Magus' Bride, this movie tells the story of how the dispossessed 15 year old girl Chise Hatori (Hatori Chise in Japanese) is bought by a monstrous sorcerer named Elias. However, things are not as dire as they seem. Elias informs Chise that she has a rare magical talent, and that he will therefor take her on as his apprentice... and in the future, as his bride.

A whole episode is dedicated to cats, and a man who is shown to kill them on screen. This episode is pointless to the plot, so go ahead and skip it !! The episode is 4 and part of 5. Timestamps for Episode 4: 10:30 to around 14:26. It's referenced in 5 but explicit scenes are not shown. Enjoy!!

Please skip episode 5 if you cannot watch cats die. A character slaughters them to use them as ingredients and it's very disturbing.

Elias never expresses any sexual inclinations at all. Chise thinks Elias is messing with her when he talks about marriage, until she realizes he has no concept of what it actually means, just that it's what humans do when they get really close to each other.

With regard to being kissed/hugged/grabbed without consent. Chise is often pulled away from danger or carried while injured or when magic may make her lose her way. In episode 1, Chise is kissed goodbye on the cheek by a butterfly fae. In episode 16, Elias asks if Chise would like to kiss under the mistletoe, and she asks him to crouch down to give him a kiss on the forehead. With regard to being hugged, there are many situations where Chise's trauma has her expecting to be punished for things going wrong, and another character present will hug her or pat her on the head as reassurance, typically Elias.
Elias and Chise both separately establish that their relationship is as family in the first episode, and repeatedly talk to each other and others about their dynamic throughout the series.
None of the interactions between Elias and Chise are sexualized in any way, and Elias is essentially ace. Titania says something about kids to his face and he literally has no idea what she's talking about. (I'm not even sure he knows where kids come from...)

Not typically, but there is one short scene where animated sewn together corpses get torn apart. The main character grows very large and shadowy however, and most of it is hidden behind his form.

No genuine horror show jumpscares. Any jumpscare type situation is typically preceded by the music changing and a trumpet noise a few seconds before.

One of the first episodes shows Chise having a bath. It's shown as a comedic scene, but it can make anyone uncomfortable. She is shown to be nude as well. Not quite to the level of sexualizing her, but it's still awkward.

Chise is suicidal for the first half of the 1st season and does a lot of self destructive things. At one point she self harms by digging her nails into her arm until she bleeds. In another scene she threatens suicide and holds a knife to her throat until it draws blood

While not gender specific, many characters have very specific terms they ask to be referred to as, and it's very important to refer to them as such. In episode 1, the fairies ask to be referred to as "neighbors."

Elias is over a hundred years old and Chise is 15 at the start of the series. Their relationship isn’t necessarily romantic though, as Elias has no concept of romance and views marriage as just a longterm friendship commitment

The relationship between the two main characters isn't, but it does come close in a way people who are triggered by this might have trouble with. (For example, they may be described in one scene as parent and child, but in another as husband and wife.)
