The second of two theatrically released follow-ups to the Neon Genesis Evangelion series. Comprising of two alternate episodes which were first intended to take the place of episodes 25 and 26, this finale answers many of the questions surrounding the series, while also opening up some new possibilities.
This movie contains 83 potentially triggering events.
Shinji’s dad doesn’t really bother looking for his son during the armed military invasion, who are actively targeting him, and seems much more concerned about Rei than Shinji.
Shinji’s father see’s his son as a means to an end and nothing else, having very little care if his son suffers physical or psychological damage from his plan.
It's implied that all life on Earth was reverted back to the primordial soup, but the good news is that it's also implied that if a lifeform with a consciousness decides to leave the LCL hivemind, they can get their physical form back.
Misato, an adult, kisses Shinji, a child, and says that they will do “the rest” (sex) later. Misato dies immediately after, so they never do it. Also, Gendo touches Rei’s breast.
(SPOILERS) the film infamously opens with a scene of a character masturbating over the comatose body of another character. later on, an adult kisses a teenager
The Lilith/Giant Rei is killed by having their head slowly and graphically disconnect from the flesh and bone of their neck, before complete coming off and crashing into the earth. Quite graphic and drawn out.
When one of the Mass Production Units lands, it’s foot smashes a tank and several people with it. While the scene is quick and no gore is shown, someone does get crushed to death
We see Rei become a giant white naked thing when infused with Adam, she gets this weird vagina thing in her forehead that gets stabbed with the Lance of Longinus, and she falls apart.
*Spoilers*
When Asuka is fighting the MPE's and looses, her EVA is brutally mutilated, and it is implied that she feels everything with bloodcuring screams)
Several Nerv soldiers are stabbed to death by Military. Shinji and Asuka’s EVA’s are stabbed by giant spears. Since the Eva’s are connected to their nerves, they feel the pain of being stabbed in their actual body, which includes in the eye.
Evangellions, which aren’t just giant robots but actual sentient creatures. Also although not onscreen, it’s a pretty safe assumption that Pen-Pen doesn’t survive the third impact.
It's complicated. If you're not familiar with the NGE series it might be hard to notice, but Gendo Ikari, who's married to EVA 01(prior to her becoming an EVA), did have an affair with Ritsuko's mom(whose emotions and thoughts the Magi had uploaded onto them), and after Ritsuko's mom died Gendo had an affair with Ritsuko. It's implied that the reason why Kaspar betrayed Ritsuko when she tried to stop Gendo is because Kaspar still loves Gendo. So technically there's a brief mention of Gendo's unfaithfulness, but unlikely to be triggering.
Not cops per say but the first half involves the military gunning people down (with plans to even include the child EVA pilots) which is portrayed as a horrifying war crime
Asuka is put in an Eva and hidden underwater in the lake to try and hide both of them from the military. It doesn’t work for long at all and they just fire missiles into the lake to try and kill her. Also at the end, Shinji falls into the lake and sinks pretty far down but resurfaces fine.
Names like Adam and Lilith are used, as well as iconography like a crucifixion motif, but these seem to be more symbolic or aesthetic then direct religious representation
At one point, Rei is lying on top of Shinji and both are naked. Rei is also naked when Gendo enlists her to start Third Impact. Gendo even gropes her breast so he can put ‘Adam’ into her body
The entire movie revolves around existentialism and characters having a crisis over it. The second half of the film particular, is basically nothing but existential events. The film itself is also a direct criticism of escapism and the audience who used the series to escape their own problems in life.
Extreme levels of carnage throughout the film. These scenes include an EVA being hideously ripped apart and cannibalized, as the pilot reacts in agony. A massive character with a rather human appearance is decapitated, causing there to be a literal ocean of blood. An EVA gorily tears apart various other EVAs, at one point bathing in one's blood. Various scientists die in bloody ways, mostly from being shot or stabbed.
