Follow the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a path of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, Paul endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.
This movie contains 55 potentially triggering events.
Maybe not in a physically violent way, but the fact that Jessica pushes Paul to take on a religious/leadership role that is stated outright to be dangerous or even deadly for him can be triggering. In the same vein, for generations women have had children to satisfy the Bene Gesserit and grow certain "bloodlines." These children may have been loved, but they were always used as pawns.
No snakes, but there's a scene where a young sandworm is pulled out of the sand and wraps around someone like a big snake. It's right when Jessica arrives in the south.
nothing directly in the movie, but in the original book there is and there a few references to this in the film but without knowing about the original you probably wouldn't think much of it
The previous comment is not accurate. The were not raped, they were being choked to death. One probably screamed seeing the other girl being choked and then got choked herself. The character threatens to do the same to his nephew and show the girls as to clear a point.
A character's breath is ragged after he is stabbed. A villain character who relies on tubes/machines as life support has trouble breathing after the tubes are cut.
in the very beginning of the movie a pile of bodies is burned, as well as at the end of the movie. everyone is already dead that is being burned but you can see the bodies
Pretty sure the neck gets broken in the scene after the spice depot explodes, I left the screen for about 5 minutes after it exploded, and didn't see it happen :)
There are definitely some sudden noises (like gunshots) and instrumental stings, in addition to sudden uses of “The Voice,” and a scene where someone jokingly makes a sudden gesture to frighten their friend which may be startling to people, but no actual jump scares
NOT SAFE, it has two instances, I missed like 5 minutes, but these are the instances I saw
The first one is during the beginning after Lady Jessica and Paul fight with Harkonnen, you can see it coming as Lady Jessica starts gagging and Stilgar asks her to “do not waste it” (or something like that) and then she turns around and v*, you can’t see anything as her body cover any visual
The second one is during a flight from the Harkonnen, Dave Bautista’s characters says something like “do I have to do it all by myself?” (sorry I can’t remember the dialog accurately but you’ll know when!) and it cuts to someone projectile v*, this is full audio and visual but quick
during the fight scene with austin butlers character and his opponents, he pins one of them down and you can see water pouring out of their mouth. it’s in black and white tho
Towards the last 30ish minutes, a man is looking at a ship and building through binoculars. Wet, shutter sounds are heard when he blinks/looks at something else.
during an attack on one of the harvesting machines, the fremen fighters crawl/run underneath the machine as it’s moving. dark, with loud machine noises and wheels moving towards them, running towards the other side which is a small slice of bright light
this movie is VERY loud in theaters, often very suddenly. if you are sensitive to loud noises i honestly would recommend waiting until you can watch it at home
There was one scene in particular I remember having an unsettling shaky camera. I do not have the timestamp but I believe it occurred as Paul and the Fremen were walking through a small canyon. There is little shakiness that occurs consistently throughout the film
1. 01:21:17 - 01:23:45 mix of flashing sequences: strobe lights and thunder lightings (scene with a bald man and a woman) start with somewhat dimmed flashing sequences but then intensifies). 2. 01:52:36 - 01:52:49 strobe lights (when a main character drinks a blue liquid) go straight to the strobing mode.
A pregnant person drinks poison and the fetus is threatened and it looks like it could cause a miscarriage but does not. Triggering for anyone who has had a miscarriage or threatened miscarriage.
Lots of footage from embryo to fetus etc shown from the inside. The mother talks with the baby a lot and the baby talks back. Could be triggering for anyone ttc.
Orientalism and white savior narrative, world is based heavily on MENA culture yet has few if any MENA actors in the cast. At least one of the Fremen (the MENA-inspired culture) is played by a white actor. Fatphobia in Baron’s portrayal, his weight is conflated with being grotesque and eating and the actor is in a fat suit. Erases Baron being gay (although his queerness has only ever been portrayed as predatory in other iterations).
Yes, but in the context of a fictional religion (albeit one inspired by real religions) where Paul Atreides is a messiah. This film notably replaces the "jihad" from the books and 1984 film with a less religion-specific "holy war."
