There is technically violence towards animals in the book, but the abusers are other animals and they are anthropomorphic. For example, in one scene a villainous squirrel grabs the heroine, another squirrel, by the hair. There are many casualties in a war waged between the bats and the squirrels.

Many squirrels, bats and other creatures die throughout the book. They are heavily anthropomorphized, however, and so seem more like humans than animals.
