Set in the English countryside of the 1920s - when otter hunting was still legal - this film follows the life of Tarka the Otter from his birth into adulthood. We witness his close shaves, and his struggle with a man who tries to keep our furry hero as a pet.
At the end of the film, Tarka the otter and Deadlock the dog get into a final underwater confrontation, during which both animals mortally wound one another and drown. The fight itself is not overly graphic (mostly achieved through a series of rapidly cross-cut close-ups), but you do see Deadlock's body in the aftermath.
Tarka is implied to drown along with Deadlock at the end, but his case no body is shown, just a sequence of rising air bubbles that eventually cease. Earlier in the film, Tarka's father is killed by the hunt (happens offscreen; we only know because the narrator tells us) and his mother is shot by a gamekeeper.
An assortment of animal corpses are hung up on display by the gamekeeper, including Tarka's mother. We get a few close-up shots of her lifeless, bleeding face. The drowned body of Deadlock the dog is shown at the end.
