Three intercut stories about outsiders, sex and violence. In "Hero," Richie, at age 7, kills his father and flies away. After the event, a documentary in cheesy lurid colors asks what Richie was like and what led up to the shooting. In the black and white "Horror," a scientist isolates the elixir of human sexuality, drinks it, and becomes a festering, contagious murderer; a female colleague who loves him tries to help, to her peril. In "Homo," a prisoner in Fontenal prison is drawn to an inmate whom he knew some years before, at Baton juvenile institute, and whose humiliations he witnessed. This story is told in dim light, except for the bright flashbacks.
This movie contains 18 potentially triggering events.
There are a few shaky moments of handcam during the “Horror” portion but most notably around an hour in when Dr. Graves has a breakdown and destroys his apartment it’s very shaky.
When Dr. Graves is in the hospital he says he “hears flies on the ceiling” and there are some quick shots of people with large fly wings but they are quick jump cuts, tthe sound of the buzzing is there.
Sort of? The “Horror” storyline revolves around a man slowly deforming and decaying and there are lots of self-hatred speech and moments of him wanting to be cured and look differently.
In the “Hero” storyline the entire plot revolves around an abusive man being killed by his son. His abuse to his wife and son is talked about throughout the film but not shown until an hour, nineteen minutes in. We see him attempting to overpower her in bed and slap her multiple times where he screams at her. He throws a lamp at her and knocks her out. It goes on for quite some time until the man is shot.
It is implied that an unseen child was being abused by his father, both physically and possibly also sexually, so he shot his father and flew away. This information begins the film and is referenced throughout. Nothing is seen, just spoken about.
There is a moment near the beginning where the men are standing in the prison yard watching two other men in the center. One man is physically forcing the other into sexual positions and degrading him by calling him slurs. There is a small moment a bit later where a man is peeing outside, and another catcalls him before inserting a finger into him, it is vague but felt in consented to me. During the entire “Hero” storyline it is vaguely alluded to that the young man at the center of the story was sexually assaulted by his father and perhaps recreated spanking scenarios with another boy who said he didn’t want to. About an hour and nine minutes in there is a fight between two men and one rapes the other, it is graphic and involves ripping of clothes and there is clearly pain. The scene is very long and ends around one hour and thirteen minutes.
About an hour and eight minutes in two men fight and one chokes the other, it’s over quick enough and they continue to fight but the choking and struggling to breathe begins it.
No, but there is a character in the spitting scene (detailed elsewhere on this page) that is wearing something on his neck that looks a lot like a noose.
About an hour, seventeen minutes in a man jumps off of his building and falls, though the impact does not kill him he is taken to a hospital where he slowly dies.
Kind of. In the “Homo” storyline John is jealous about his would be lover sleeping with other men in the prison, though his lover does it for his safety and survival. They aren’t exclusive but John feels it is cheating and is upset through part of the film. About an hour in Richie’s mother admits that she cheated on her husband with their teenage gardener.
A few small moments of spit, but a very graphic and prominent spitting moment happens when Dr. Graves is walking down the street and sees two young girls, one spits on him and runs away. This happens a third of the way through the film. There’s another very long and graphic spitting scene about one hour and thirteen minutes in where a young man is forced to stand with his mouth open while other young men spit at him and into his mouth. This scene ends around one hour, fifteen minutes.
Homophobic slurs are used throughout the “Homo” section, aka John Broom’s storyline in the prison. Near the end of the film during the long abuse scene Richie’s father used racial slurs directed at a young Latino man.
Yes, a lot of John Broom’s story (the “Homo” section) revolves around his sexual attraction and there are times when sex is shown, as well as a handjob scene where a penis is shown about an hour into the film. Sexual content is also referenced in the “Horror” section.
It’s a sad movie — there is one character who has a happy ending after going through a lot of hardship but the other two have sad conclusions to their stories.
In the “Horror” storyline Dr. Graves slowly deforms and there are moments of his face oozing puss and it’s pretty gross. About an hour in he has a breakdown and cries and his head begins to bleed and ooze.
As said in other warnings, a young boy shoots his abusive dad. Spoken about throughout the film and shown in the last moments of the film during a long scene showing the abuse.
