After her son Kevin commits a horrific act, troubled mother Eva reflects on her complicated relationship with her disturbed son as he grew from a toddler into a teenager.
This movie contains 59 potentially triggering events.
I have no idea why there are so many Yes votes. There isn't a dog in the entire movie. There is a guinnipig that is insinuated to die but you don't actually see anything. There is definitely no dog death.
There is one major and one minor scene of physical abuse to a small child by a parent. There is a significant amount of emotional abuse by the same parent to the same child throughout the film, though it's depicted subtly and many viewers don't pick up on this.
Eva throws Kevin against a wall when he is a child, breaking his arm. She regrets the act and attempts to show Kevin how much she loves him. Kevin is rough with his little sister, insulting her and attacking her with a vacuum cleaner.
A guinea pig is killed (offscreen) and a character explains the death to a young girl: ‘he is having a party in the garden now with new animal friends’
As a child, Kevin fills a water gun with paint and sprays it on the walls of Eva’s bedroom. In retaliation, she takes the water gun and stamps on it while Kevin watches.
One scene shows kids dressed as clowns for Halloween attacking the mother’s house and car. Another shows a computer virus with a clown that pops up. Another shows a doctor’s office with clown photos all over it.
Around 55 minutes in. Once she picks the boy up from the floor, look away for about one minute. She is cleaning up vomit from the floor. No actual vomiting, just the aftermath.
when Kevin is pushed against the wall/floor, the sound makes it clear that the act was intense enough to cause an injury, but it's nothing like what you might hear in other movies when a character breaks a bone. it's mostly a loud bang. other sounds in other scenes might indicate that something gore happened, while not being triggering in themselves the context makes it hard to listen.
As a toddler, Kevin’s mother questions his pediatrician as to whether or not his delayed ability to speak could be a sign of autism, but that is the only time that autism is discussed and Kevin is not diagnosed with autism.
early on in Kevin’s childhood a doctor says he might be autistic, in the movie he goes through a lot of abuse, (not because of his posible autism though)
[SPOILER] there is a scene where parents and students outside of the school where there has been a shooting our screaming and crying. Not sure if this would be considered a meltdown, but it could be upsetting seeing all these people so very much in shock
There are tons of extremely close-up chewing and licking sounds, along with near-constant baby screeching. I had to watch most of it on mute. The amount of eating was ridiculous.
Franklin finds out Eva is pregnant long after she knows and begins to show and says something like “When were you planning on telling me? I don’t get to be part of this decision.” Which seems like an implication that it’s too late for her to get an abortion and they might have had he known earilier
Eva, unprompted, comments to Kevin at the mini golf place that fat people are always eating, that the only reason for fatness is eating too much. (More bias/prejudice than jokes.)
not in the usual sense, but Kevin's mother walks in on him masturbating and proceeds to continue while making eye contact with her until she closes the door and leaves
Eva walks in on Kevin masturbating, he continues and gives her a creepy smile. There are also sexual scenes between Eva and her husband, one of which Kevin walks in on as a child.
No, but there are a few scenes where characters push their faces into water and the camera shows it from underneath the water meaning you see it clearer so that could be slightly triggering for some people.
While the weapon used is later revealed to be a bow and arrow, there is a school shooting and the images associated with one (news reporters, ambulances and police cars, etc)
