Mel is a broke, fat, Black JFK airport employee who's never been in love and forgotten how to dream, until an accidental brush with death catapults her on a journey to finally take flight and start living by any means necessary.

[spoiler] the main character, Mel, is crushed under a piece of falling furniture. It later says that she was dead for three minutes, but was revived or survived it. The act of crushing is not shown (just the furniture as it starts to fall towards her). Then later she returns to the apartment where there are puddles of blood she cleans off the floor.
Towards end of episode 1, in the hospital. !!![spoiler]!!! after the old woman dies, Melissa gets out of bed and pulls the sheet away from her face. She v’s and it is audible and graphically visible.
