Walter Sparrow is an animal control officer that becomes obsessed with a mysterious book that seems to be based on his own life. As soon as he opens the book, he notices strange parallels between what he reads and what he's experienced. But now he's worried that a fictional murder might materialize.
This movie contains 18 potentially triggering events.
not that I remember, not dramatically or heavy to the plot I guess but if you like animals just a btw walter sparrow is an animal control worker and at the beginning he tries to get a violent dog under control
There is a scene where it shows the main character at what looks to be a college. They are looking into a classroom and a male teacher is looking over at a female student’s work. The female student holds the teacher’s hand for a brief moment. The scene doesn’t last long.
i don’t know why the other comment got thumbs down, it is correct. spoilers:
throughout the movie the main character realizes that he is eerily similar to the character in a book. the movie portrays this by showing us the book’s story in a different color tone, acted by jim carrey too (and the other actors have two roles, for example virginia madsen plays both his wife and the book character’s romantic partner.)
the book character & his love interest have a consensual violence aspect to their sexual relationship. however, ultimately, he kills her. in real life, the main character fanatsizes/dreams about killing his wife. he is distressed about it, but also sees himself as the character in the book and doesn’t seem to know whether he will act on it or not.
also, there is an IRL side character who was murdered at 23 years old and her body was buried in secret by her killer & never found. her killer was her partner.
there IS domestic violence in this movie. it’s not like the book parts don’t count, lol. they show it onscreen, it’s not just discussed by the IRL characters. it could be argued that the main plot is whether jim carrey will kill his wife or not, like the book character did.
Someone commits suicide by jumping out of a window (two scenes of that kind during the movie). We, very briefly, see their head hit the ground and a lot of blood afterwards.
Someone commits suicide by jumping out of a window. Presumably they broke some bones, but neither do you hear or see the breaking per se nor do you see an exposed bone.
around 3 different times are shown, thats just the attempts theres other scenes with different characters who actually succeeded and are shown on screen
I do not know if any characters ever said this, but a theme you’ll see is suicide in the movie. I would say it’s not shoved in your face, but there are scenes where it shows characters committing suicide. So yeah, beware if that is triggering to you.
At around the 48 minute mark there is a TV shown with a static screen and around the 1 hour and 16 minute mark there is two shaky cam scenes with flashing images.
