It's not a dog but right when the movie starts there is a deer in the school and it's half dead. And he goes to put it out of its “misery†forcefully by what appears to be him stomping on its head. It cuts out but you hear the sound and the noises the deer makes.
It is extremely heavily implied that one of the characters' brothers died while he was enlisted in the military. It's never confirmed, but it's very obvious (they keep his room the exact same, the character avoids questions about when his brother is coming home, he flies into a violent rage when someone insults his brother, etc etc).
A person who recently died appears in a character's nightmare, and after he wakes up the deceased person is seen sitting on him for a brief second. It is never confirmed if this is an apparition or not
