A struggling screenwriter inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster's beloved Shih Tzu.
This movie contains 42 potentially triggering events.
NO ANIMALS DIE - I scoured the internet for spoilers because a shih tzu is featured in a sinister setting and I have one of those bug-eyed little dogs and it would kill me if one died. But none do and it's a great movie so enjoy!
There's a scene where a teenage girl's dead body is briefly shown and we are told that the murderer did something horrific to her. It's not explicitly stated that this involved sexual violence, but it could be interpreted that way. We don't see the killing or any sexual assault onscreen.
A mans head is seen being sawn off, another decapitated head is seen (if you notice it), people are burned alive, people are shot, people die in an explosion, someone's arm is cut off, someone's hands are pinned to a table with knives, a teen girl is seen bloodied on a road (clothed).
A story is told in which a man finds his daughter brutally murdered and vows revenge. We see the teenage girl's blood-covered body (shown in two scenes) but the actual killing is not shown.
The parent(s) who die had lost their child years ago, so it's not a movie where a child is left grieving the loss of a parent, in case that makes a difference.
Straight razor used to cut a throat multiple times throughout the movie, recurring flashbacks of the same scene where a man slices his own throat and then sees another man do it as well
in the retelling of the story of a pair of psychopaths, the psychopaths murder a serial killer, who appears to be in an institution of some type, likely a mental institution - it's not clear as to where it is.
Whilst the characters ages are never explicity stated, Woody Harrelson was 51 during filming and the woman who plays his partner was 33, she also has an affair with Sam Rockwells character who was 44.
The ending is bittersweet but not hopelessly sad. [SPOILERS] Some sympathetic characters do die. The main character survives and is able to move on with his life.
Gunshots including headshots (one character head explodes on screen but this is a joke and doesn't actually happen), someone is shot through the neck with an arrow (same scene as the exploding head scene), people burn alive, someone is seen being decapitated and see another headless body, someones arm is cut off, etc.
