Out of Universe: Adam is played by a cisgender woman, it was commonplace to cast cis people of the opposite gender as trans characters at the time but this casting is transphobic and adversely affected the writing. Specifically, they couldn’t have the character get HRT until right before he died. The non-binary character is also played by a cis person.
- Craig's father beats him in season 2;
- KC's mother suffered from abuse at the hands of his father in season 11, it is never shown but explained;
- Miles gets slapped by his father in season 14.
There's multiple characters who have an addiction so I'll forget some too:
- Anya, Craig, etc have a drug addiction;
- Allie has a gambling addiction;
- Fiona suffers from alcoholism;
- Katie has a painkiller addiction.
There's a storyline detailing Fiona Coyne's addiction to alcohol. In addition, Ellie abuses alcohol in Degrassi Goes Hollywood (end of season 8) to disastrous results. There's a few other instances as well.
Season 11 Episode 13 (Should have said No part 2): when Jake asks Clare if they can talk they go to a classroom and there's a snake in a vivarium in there. Be prepared because the scene opens with a close up of it, it is rather difficult to avoid and quite sudden if you don't know about it.
Paige, Darcy and Zoe were raped, the coach watched p**n with KC and hired a prostitute for him, Janes father used to sexually abuse her as a child, Tristan was statutory raped...etc.
It is however important to note Drew Torres' potential assault by Katie Matlin is never threated with any concern for him. Especially given he didn't consent to either sleeping with her explicitely & having it videotaped & then distributed to the entire school. Everyone accuses him of cheating on Bianca DaSousa, including Bianca
Not entirely explicit, but a main character is raped in the episode Shout. The last we see of her before her next seen is her telling her rapist no, and him ignoring her.
- Rick Murray in Season 4 via a gunshot wound
- JT Yorke in Season 7 via a stab
- Campbell Saunders in Season 12 via suicide
- Adam Torres in Season 13 via a text & driving car crash
Maya is briefly held captive and threatened after trying to locate and help another missing girl who was involved in a plot with her boyfriend trying to collect ransom money.
Snake cheats on spike with Mrs, Hatsilakos, Jane cheats on Spinner with Declan, Damien cheats on Emma with Liberty, Dylan cheats on Marco, Craig cheats on Ashley with Manny, Ashley cheats on Jimmy with Sean, Jesse cheated on Ellie with Caitlin, Eli cheats on Clare...etc
I would add there are a couple more episodes. Season 2 Episode 9 “Mirror in the Bathroom” and Season 3 Episode 8 Whisper to a Scream “. Both only have sounds nothing is seen.
This episode is all about Adam & the obstacles he has to overcome to his family sans Drew who was accepting of him - with a few bumps in the road - since the beginning as a transgender man.
His birthname Gracie is mentioned by a family member, though I don't remember if it was the grandmother or Audra Torres
hunter almost shoots up a school dance, breaks computers and shoves yael (ODD,) craig attacks joey jeremiah in front of his kid (bipolar,) eli crashes his car for clare (bipolar,) there are probably more examples
aside from katie's bulimia and emma's eating disorder, there are also instances wherein characters abuse laxatives/diet pills to lose weight (toby in the episode 'mirror in the bathroom' and jenna in 'i just don't know what to do with myself'), although in both of those cases a full-blown eating disorder isn't developed and the characters stop the behaviour at the end of the episode
Craig has a flashback at the end of season 2 when in the same room as his father. This could be indicative of PTSD, but we never see any more from Craig.
Dave wears a dress and a wig and tries to enter the women's bathroom in attempt to make a "point" about a transgender student. This plot line is resolved and Dave never makes another transphobic comment.
Terri is picked on several times due to her weight, although this plot point is used to encourage self-love when Terri gets a modelling job. Two girls poke fun at Emma for wearing a baggy sweatsuit and point out "fat" on her body. It should be noted that Emma was quite skinny and struggling with anorexia at the time.
Hate speech is used against Marco when he comes out, and the same when Adam is revealed to be transgender. One major instance is when Dave calls out Adam on their radio show.
there are MANY teacher-student plotlines. a particularly bad example is sav and ms. oh. if you're sensitive to those kinds of things just skip those scenes entirely. i haven't faced trauma of any kind and they still gross me out and are an immediate skip when i rewatch. it's also worth noting that all of them are portrayed in a POSITIVE light except for tristain and this one teacher. very messed up :|
Given for the majority of the show the cast were the same age as the characters - & thus underaged, the show was targeted to teenagers & the strict laws on this in Canada, there are no nude scenes
characters do have sex or enter sexual relationships on many occasions throughout the show but as it's a show aimed at teens nothing terribly graphic is seen onscreen beyond making out
There's people both pro- & anti-abortion in this episode which is a given at the time this was made
At the end of the day Manny aborts, given she was only 14
On occasion there's a little bit of blood -- the attempted suicide attempt in "Standing in the Dark" part 2, a character being shot in "Danger Zone" -- but it's never particularly graphic.
In Time Stands Still Part II Jimmy gets shot by Rick in the spine - paralysing him from the waist down - & Sean accidentally shoots Rick in the abdomen - killing him in self-defense.
In Dead & Gone Part II Adam gets shot by Vince - Bianca's ex-boyfriend - in the shoulder. Due to being Adam's friend at that point & having had enough of Vince ruining her life, Bianca expresses desire to kill Vince with the very gun he used. It is implied she did not go through with it.
