The peacefulness of the Midsomer community is shattered by violent crimes, suspects are placed under suspicion, and it is up to a veteran DCI and his young sergeant to calmly and diligently eliminate the innocent and ruthlessly pursue the guilty.
Episode 'Written in Blood': a drama teacher frequently eyes up his 15 year old student, and later has sex with her - unfortunately the show frames it as the girl 'seducing' him to blackmail him and paints him as the victim (despite her being underage)
There are often murders of women, some more violent than others, but equally as many violent murders of men in the series. It does not feel like the violence is focused on women
S8 EP.4 "Bantling Boy": there's a scene where a horse is extremely distressed and neighing, stomping as he's watching a human he knows being murdered. The horse becomes very sad and ill and won't eat his food (he makes a full recovery and is happy near the end though)
Ep. 'Garden of Death': Not exactly abuse, but this episode is about an adult woman who finds and then moves in with her biological family (she was previously adopted) and they're all mean to her and don't want her around
Ep. 'Garden of Death': No, but this episode is about an addult woman who finds and then moves in with her biological family (after having been adopted) and they're not very nice to her
'Strangler's wood' a woman mentions her partner likes choking her in bed and that she doesn't like it but, and the other day he tried to do it again. ------- also there are historical murders of women by strangulation, which are sexually motivated
S6 Ep2 'Death and Dreams': We hear that the first victim was drugged until they were unconscious by their murderer, and near the end of the episode we see this happen in a flashback where they are force fed the drugs in a cup. ________Also, Barnaby is drugged which causes him to fall asleep.
Ep 'Blood Will Out': In this episode a lot of the charaters are from a travelling community, who are all portrayed as criminals. _______Also we see very briefly some morris dancers with blackface
'Blood Will Out': someone is threatened and about to be beaten by a belt, but they get away SPOILERS---- this happens between father and adult daughter, it's implied this has happened before when she was a child.
S9 Ep2 'Dead Letters': two scenes where this happens, including the very first scene. Two Characters are drugged before being murdered, this causes them to hallucinate voices telling them to kill themselves or others. It also makes them very disorientated and there is shakey cam
S8 EP.4 "Bantling Boy": unsure - a couple are having an argument and the husband shouts and slaps either the woman or the bed she's sitting on (was very quick so I couldn't tell). Also, a woman is seen with a black eye and bandaged wrist and we hear that her husband was abusive, but don't see this on screen.
(Strangler's Wood) We see someone about to strangle a woman with a tie, we see them reaching over to do it and then it cuts. We also see the body of a woman who has been strangled with a tie. ___________ This is the most we see of any strangulation (in other words we don't see it happening or see anyone struggling to breathe), although we hear it talked about a lot and it is the main theme of the episode.
S9 Ep2 'Dead Letters': discussed a woman's daughter died years before, and in the *very first scene' she hears voices telling her to kill herself to 'join her' (and she is then found dead).. Also later, ***SPOILERS*** the father of a young daughter dies
S8 Ep 1 "Things that go bump in the night": not exactly a razor, but in this episode people are murdered with their wrists slit, which looks like self harm. Lots of blood on the wrists of the bodies. We don't actually see them being cut, but near the end we see the murderer pull out a box cutter (thing with a blade) and it goes to the next scene.
S8 Ep 1 "Things that go bump in the night": prolonged screaming at the start when a woman finds a dead body. Goes on for longer than usually happens in most midsomer episodes. There's also a scene later during a seance where scary screaming is heard around the room
S8 EP6 "Hidden Depths": a masked man approaches a woman to tie her, holding tape, she says 'not the mouth! ' but in the end he doesn't gag her. I think a man's mouth is gagged later on
S9 Ep8 'Four Funerals and a Wedding': one of the main characters is a vicar. Some scenes take place inside a church. However little discussion of religion
S9 Ep2 'Dead Letters': not exactly, however two people are drugged which gives them symptoms of mental illness. It makes them disoriented and hallucinating voices, and in these scenes there is shaky camera as we see from their point of view. This includes in the very first scene, a mother wakes at night hearing voices telling her to kill herself, and a later scene where the voices are akin to paranoia, tell a man to 'kill them'
S10 ep 1 "Dance with the Dead": an older lady has dementia and hasn't seen her brother since he left for WW2, she thinks he may still come back and prepares things for him
S8 Ep.3 "Orchis Fatalis": one of the suspects had been to prison before and is out on licence, the detectives threaten to send him back to prison if he doesn't tell them information. (However we don't see any scenes of anyone in prison)
S8 Ep.3 "Orchis Fatalis": first scene two people are walking through a river at about knee height, but there is no danger. We also very briefly see a pond, and later a man tries to jump onto a small punting boat which is on the river
S10 ep7 "They Seek Him Here": decapitations that happen on screen for a french revolution film in the episode. Also some of the Midsomer characters are found already decapitated. There is also a tense scene where an actor has their head in the guillotine for the film, and they're scared it might happen for real
S9 Ep.4 "Down Among the Dead Men": Barnaby is seen cooking, he says he's cooking rabbit that was shot by someone he knows. We see the family eating the meal and later we see bones in the rubbish
S9 Ep.1"The House in the Woods": multiple characters are strangled/garroted with a thin wire. Seen on screen and then see the bodies with a cut around their necks
S9 Ep.4 "Down Among the Dead Men": No child is abused. However many discussions about allegations of abuse from a man who used to house teenage girls and whether he is innocent or not
In 'Death of a Hollow Man' a man slaps his former partner with force on stage. In the same episode, a theatre director is verbally abusive to the timid stage manager, frequently calling her brainless etc.__________________In 'Faithful Unto Death' it's repeatedly mentioned that one character is abusive to his wife 'he knocks her about, I've seen the bruises'- however [****SPOILER*** it's revealed that the wife was making up the abuse and faking bruises with makeup.]. __________ Also in this episode, not DV but may be very triggering: a woman is kidnapped and we are shown photos of her with a breaten and bloody face_____________Episode 'Death in Disguise' mentions of physical DV but none is shown on screen
S9 Ep5 "Death in Chorus": SPOILERS: A man keeps his wife drugged so she forgets something she saw and she becomes extremely sedated and confused. He keeps her from leaving the house and cuts off the telephone lines
'Faithful Unto Death' a man regularly drinks to excess_____________In 'Death in Disguise' a character has a drug addiction and we see them behaving under the influence but we don't see them injecting or ingesting it.
S10 ep7 "They Seek Him Here": a main character used to have a drinking problem but doesn't any more, other people taunt him about his past. There's also a scene where a different character is a bit drunk
'Faithful Unto Death', cannabis. Worth mentioning Barnaby unknowingly eats some cakes spiked with cannabis, and doesn't know why he's behaving differently__________'Death in Disguise' a character has a drug addiction and we see them behaving under the influence but we don't see them injecting or ingesting it
S8 EP.4 "Bantling Boy": There are scenes of both horse racing and jousting, but no horse is harmed during these. A horse becomes unwell and it's suspected their been drugged, however they make a full recovery (SPOILERS and they weren't drugged, it was a red herring)
Ep. 'Death of a Stranger': Lots of already dead animals in this episode. There is a room full of taxidermied animals and some hanging from the ceiling. We see a man doing close up taxidermy
Episode 'Written in Blood': a drama teacher frequently eyes up his 15 year old student, and later has sex with her - unfortunately the show frames it as the girl 'seducing' him to blackmail him and paints him as the victim (despite her being underage) - I would seriously avoid this episode if it's a trigger. _____________'Death of a Hollow Man there is no sexual assault, however there's a scene where they're acting on stage that feels sexual, where a man is chasing a woman and says 'I'm going to tear my mouse'_________The rest of the episodes in Season One do not have any sexual assault.
S10 ep 1 "Dance with the Dead": no, but scenes that may be triggering. A creepily shot scene shows an old man looking at a computer screen, it then shows he is looking at erotic photos of a young woman (late teens/early 20s). He also is a photographer and has a room full of erotic photos of this person. There's also a scene where's at a dance taking photos of just the girls/women (unsure if under/over aged), including encouraging them to show their stockings
"The Night of the Stag": While the act itself doesn't go through, there's a graphic rape attempt from a man to an unwitting woman. This is portrayed as bad, but also not listed as a crime.
Although there are usually multiple murders in an episode, and we often see the dead body, there is not excessive gore and the injuries are usually things like stab wounds. If someone has been killed in a more gorey way (e.g. decapitation) we are usually not shown the injuries, and see the police's reaction to them seeing the body instead.
S8 EP7 "Sauce for the Goose": not a hanging of a real person, but a fake stuffed man is hung from a noose from a tree. We learn that historically, someone died by hanging, but this is not shown.
In 'The Killing at Badger's Drif' two people are stabbed to death____________'Death of a hollow man' a man slits his throat with an old fashioned razor, but we don't see blood, w hear gurgling though. Same episode a woman is slashed with a razor___________'Death in Disguise' someone found dead with a knife in them
'The Green Man': we don't see anyone being buried alive, however, 1. there is a scene near the start where characters get trapped inside a collapsed tunnel, however they are rescued in time, and 2. skeletons are found and there are discussions of people being trapped in a similar collapse hundreds of years ago where they died
Ep. 'Dark Autumn': the victims die by being stabbed in the neck, and the police say the heads were 'nearly decapitated' however they are not actually decapitated, and all we see is blood on the neck of the dead body.
S6 Ep2 'Death and Dreams': There are three scenes where people are strangled and struggle to breathe. One of these scenes they struggle for a very long while and it's disturbing as the murderer laughs while it happens.
In 'The Killing at Badger's Drift' the first murder is by broken nck, but we don't see it happening___________'Death of a hollow man' a man jumps from a building and we see him later bandaged in hospital and are told he has fractured his ribs and leg. We don't hear them breaking or see the injuries____________'Death in Disguise' someone falls down the stairs and breaks their neck, we don't see the injury though
'A Tale of Two Hamlets': no seizure, but someone has a heart attack while being electrocuted and we see it in slow motion, I don't know if this would be triggering
In 'Written in Blood' a woman does.__________'Death of a Hollow Man' a man is scared and jumps from a building but he doesn't die_______________'Death in Disguise' someone falls down the stairs and dies. Later in the same episode someone falls through a glass ceiling, but doesn't die.
'Electric Vendetta': Not by fire, but someone is electrocuted to death. It's very violent and there is a lot of smoke. We see this scene happen twice - once in a flashback. We also see the corpse after which is completely black/burnt
S9 Ep3 "Vixen's Run": no one is crushed to death. However a character falls down an old well and is seen lying on the floor with rubble over him, but he is still alive
S8 So6 "Hidden Depths": two murders in this episode involve a level of torture. A man is tied to the ground and glass bottles are thrown at him. Another man has his head put in a sealed tv, where he has to answer questions on a 'game for your life' and wine is poured in if he doesn't answer correctly, drowning him.
S5 Ep. 3 'Ring Out Your Dead': the other comment is describing the wrong episode. No head gets squashed in S5 ep3, although someone dies from their head being hit by a swinging church bell.
S9 Ep.4 "Down Among the Dead Men": A character is found unconscious after having tried to overdose on pills. They are rushed to hospital (they do not die but a character thinks they have)
'Last Year's Model': this episode follows the murder case of a mother. There is a teen daughter and younger daughter, and it focuses a lot on them following the death. We see the teen daughter watch the court case and make a statement in court
All episode in series 1 contain cheating, Including 'Written in Blood' 'The Killing at Badger's Drift' 'Death of a Hollow Man', 'Faithful Unto Death'. except 'Death in Disguise' only very briefly mentions cheating in the past, (and this only because two people started dating while one was still in an abusive marriage.)
Ep. 'Who Killed C**k Robin?': we see a woman in the shower, a policeman enters the house without her knowledge and stares at her while she's in the shower
S8 Ep 1 "Things that go bump in the night": there are are no visible ghosts. However there are multiple seance scenes, during which the seance woman speaks in a voice which is supposed to be from a dead Victorian woman. Sometimes she speaks in a deeper, more demonic voice and appears possessed. There is also scary screaming heard around the room whilst this happens. The episode ends in a spooky way.
S8 Ep 1 "Things that go bump in the night": there are multiple seance scenes, and the woman doing them speaks in a voice which is supposed to be from someone dead, and appears possessed. There is also scary screaming heard around the room whilst this happens.
S5 ep3 'Ring out your Dead': the other comment is describing the wrong episode. No dogs vomit in S5 ep3, but a woman does. We see her put her head in the bushes and hear it happen
The series is about a police detective (Barnaby) solving murders and he is shown in a positive light. His sidekick sometimes says homophobic things, but Barnaby corrects him. In quite a lot of episodes, they enter and search people's houses knowing they haven't got a warrant. ________S8 ep2 "Dead in the Water" in particular, has lots of discussions around police ethics and Barnaby excusing things 'for the good of the investigation'
S6 Ep2 'Death and Dreams': A lot of the scenes take place at a modern day psychiatric house/hospital, but it is not like the hospitals seen in the 50s and patients are not abused, although a patient is shouted at for using climbing equipment unsupervised.
S9 Ep3 "Vixen's Run": a character is rushed to hospital by paramedics who put a mask for breathing on him. Later we see inside a hospital, but the person who was sent there as a patient is already recovered
'Death of a Hollow Man' we hear that a woman found murdered had cancer but did not get treatment. ___________In 'Death in Disguise' mention that a charcter who was murdered had cancer, but not spoken anymore of than that.
The first scene is extremely graphic and was very triggering to me. A man appears to kill himself by setting up a shotgun and indirectly pulling the trigger. The blast blowing open his chest is shown and it’s pretty sudden. I’d highly recommend skipping this scene because it was very disturbing and upsetting to me.
Ep. 'Death of a Stranger': Two instances: 1. A man says he's going to kill himself and we see him holding the gun to his head. The camera pans away and we hear a shot, but it is revealed he did not kill himself._______2. A body is found hanging, from suicide. I don't think we actually see the body but we hear it swinging
S8 Ep 1 "Things that go bump in the night": no one self harms, but people are murdered with their wrists slit, which looks like self harm. Lots of blood on the wrists of the bodies. We don't actually see them being cut, but near the end we see the murderer pull out a box cutter (thing with a blade) and it goes to the next scene.
In 'Death in Disguise' not confirmed autistic, but there's a boy who doesn't speak, and Barnaby says 'can't or won't speak?' but someone corrects him, and he is much more understanding from there on and there are no more comments like this.
One I can remember is Episode 'Written in Blood' SPOILERS where the murderer is someone who has not recovered from their relative's death, and is referred to as crazy_____________In 'Death of a Hollow Man' the murderer loses touch with reality at the end of the episode
In 'Death in Disguise' there is a teenager/young man who doesn't speak, it's hinted at that it's due to the past, but we don't hear any details about what may have happened.
Ep. 'Dark Autumn: not major, brief mention: SPOILERS ----A character discusses how their parent died years ago via suicide because they had an illness which caused them to loose their looks and become 'ugly', and so also lost their job as a sex worker. However none of this is shown on screen.
Ep 'Judgement Day': Not an anxiety attack but resembles one: a character is poisoned and we see the room spinning very fast timestamp 1:04:08 - 1:04:42
S10 ep7 "They Seek Him Here": there's a scene where an actor has their head in a film set guillotine, however the guillotine can really kill someone if misused, and someone's phone goes off during the scene so she's stuck there for a while looking genuinely scared
Series 10 Ep. 6 "picture of innocence": LOTS in this episode. There's a scene where two rival photographer groups 'fight' by flashing their cameras at eachother rapidly
This happens a lot in Midsomer Murders, and is in most episodes (e.g. a killer watching a victim, or a nosey neighbour watching next door). Some examples include: S8 ep2 "Dead in the Water" characters watched by police via a telescope, and take pictures of these suspects
A man is a severe hypochondriac and most people do not treat him with much empathy. His doctor repeatedly expresses frustration about the man’s antics. No one has malicious intentions though.
Episode 'The Killing at Badger's Drift' a woman and an older man are in a relationship and planning to be married. She is viewed as a 'goldigger' by other characters______________Episode 'Written in Blood': a drama teacher frequently eyes up his 15 year old student, and later has sex with her (statutory rape).___________ 'Faithful Unto Death' consensual age gap marriage, however there are comments that he may be being abusive to her
'Killing at Badger's Drift' two people are overheard having sex in the woods____________'Written in Blood' a teacher has sex with his 15 year old student (statutory rape) and then is blackmailed with pictures of it______________'Death in Disguise' there are some sex noises from a couple in bed, but we don't see any nudity
S10 ep 1 "Dance with the Dead": there's a character who is a retired man who does photography, he has a room full of erotic photos of young women. There's also a scene where's at a dance taking photos of just the girls/women (unsure if under/over aged), including encouraging them to show their stockings
Ep. 'Death of a Stranger': There is a character who is homeless, he is portrayed as incoherant, and everyone (including police) refer to him as a 'tramp', and someone calls him a 'stinky tramp'
'Bad Tidings': no, although a car speeds past another car, causing it to serve off the road. There is no crash and noone is hurt but Joyce is a bit shaken
A man is graphically shot in the chest with a shotgun and there is a decent amount of blood. The body is repeatedly shown with excessive blood spatter. His housekeeper finds his body and goes around the town telling everyone about how much blood there was, etc.
S5 ep3 'Ring out your Dead': the other comment is describing the wrong episode. However, in S5 ep3 (the one about bell ringers) there is a LOT of gun violence. Two people are shot and die, another is shot and wounded, we see a close up of a gun while it fires at a target, and two people are threatened at gun point
S8 EP6 "Hidden Depths": a man's head is put inside a sealed tv and liquid poured in to drown him to torture and kill him. We don't see the actual drowning, but see liquid being poured in up to his lips and he sputters while the murderer torments him. And after we see an image of his face when he's dead with the liquid up to his head.
