Cidade de Deus is a shantytown that started during the 1960s and became one of Rio de Janeiro’s most dangerous places in the beginning of the 1980s. To tell the story of this place, the movie describes the life of various characters, all seen by the point of view of the narrator, Buscapé. Buscapé was raised in a very violent environment. Despite the feeling that all odds were against him, he finds out that life can be seen with other eyes...
This movie contains 32 potentially triggering events.
No dog deaths, but keep in mind this film takes place in a very real environment of abject poverty and there are a couple emaciated dogs wandering around.
Very much so, in the “Sixties” section a woman cheats on her husband with a younger man and the husband then beats her with a shovel to near death. We don’t see it physically hitting her but there is a POV camera for a moment from her vision and we hear the impact. He later tries to bury her and we see her body being carried out when he’s caught.
Aside from a lot of physical violence towards kids, there is also a moment in “the history of the apartment” that shows a woman having sex with a young boy that I personally took to be a teen and would consider that child sexual abuse. There are also children shot in the film in some particularly distressing scenes.
The film opens with a graphic prepping of a chicken to eat, with cut-tos of a scared chicken looking on nearby. The scared chicken escapes and runs away, a pursuit (with the child hoods shooting at it) and after a very near miss with a car (does not get hit) we don’t see it again. The scared chicken’s story line on screen ends there (worth it to mention it’s a clear metaphor for escaping the slums).
About an hour and 20 minutes in, a character's girlfriend is raped by the main antagonist of the film. The leadup to it is pretty obvious, so you'll know when to skip. It's not visually graphic at all, mostly just some flashes of skin and but it's audibly upsetting with sounds of distress. If you skip about 3 minutes, you'll be able to sidestep the scene itself though it is discusses afterwards.
there is a scene where this explicitly happens, it doesn't show much of the act on screen but focuses mostly on the sounds/words of the people involved including the victim. it's hard to watch.
Most of the violence happens amongst kids, teens, and young adults - so the people we see getting shot and hurt are usually minors and young people. In a particularly rough scene a kid is forced to shoot and kill another kid, about an hour in. Later there is another similarly upsetting death though, when a young man is trying to defend his brother he stabs an adult and is gunned down. Shortly after that, there is a shootout at night that is prompted by some molotov cocktails and a young boy is gunned down, a lingering on the aftermath of that with his body very visible. Those three are the most prominent I would say.
The way the movie is edited is very fast paced so a lot of the action is flashing images. Specifically for flashing lights, about an hour and 17 minutes in there is a scene in a dance hall where strobe lights flicker that goes on for a few minutes.
Near the beginning of the film when Rocket is between the young men and the cops, he’s called the f slur. Again at about 1 hour, 22 minutes in after a character's girlfriend is assaulted, he is called the f slur.
Throughout the entire film there is fun violence. I think it’s important to note that a lot of the violent are children and young people using firearms and killing others, which I can see being particularly upsetting if this is triggering material. In one scene about an hour in a child is shot in the foot and then another child is immediately shot and killed - it's very upsetting scene. If you're sensitive to gun violence I would avoid this movie.
