A mother of two inherits a home from her aunt. On the first night in the new home she is confronted with murderous intruders and fights for her daughters’ lives. Sixteen years later the daughters reunite at the house, and that is when things get strange . . .
This movie contains 68 potentially triggering events.
Domestic violence implies a relationship. Vera slaps Beth once but that is to try and get her to wake up from her delusions, not meant with full malicious intent just frustration/desperation
No. But as there’s no “were actors harmed” question ill just put it here in case it impacts people’s viewing experience. Young Vera was injured on set due to negligence, she has a facial scar from the experience and successfully sued production.
The two girls are abused repeatedly and seem 14 more or less We don’t know their age but the younger one has her first period at the beginning of the movie Towards the end a policeman assumes they are between 14 and 15 yo
Mainly implied The hudge man sniffed the crotches of the two girls and later the elder one is vaguely shown with bare legs and blood along her inner thighs
There is a scene when Beth is dressed as a doll and he rubs all over her body, including between her legs, and smells her throat. The entire scene is long and extremely difficult to watch.
He also regularly sniffs the crotches of the young girls and female dolls.
Adult Vera’s fingers are snapped off screen and she has burn scars on her hands stating they burn her whenever she moves. When it switches back to teen timeline Vera has bandages on some of her fingers and although it doesn’t show any burns it’s implied they’re there too because the man burns the dolls hands specifically when they make noise and everything adult Vera says is true to what’s happening in the actual world.
Not choked to death but the man holds both of the girls by their throats off the ground one after the other Then around the end of the movie the man tries to choke one of the girls because she fights back
Both girls live. There is a theory that Vera actually died at the end but I feel this doesn’t mix with the theme/ending sequence of Beth actually committing to a terrible world to save Vera/herself once and for all. But to each their own
The mother dies in the opening sequence, after she attacks the one in the kitchen she is actually killed. Her surviving is part of Beth’s delusion and this is eventually broken, she sees the dead body upstairs later (the villain turns her towards it in an act of cruelty)
I’d say no. Cops do feature in the very last section but they’re not shown to be mega competent or incompetent. They side more on the side of competency since they figure out the house location and arrange for back up, intent to take the girls to the hospital before being attacked unexpectedly
Vera spends her time in the basement alone and she’s seen with injuries to which her mother/sister asks something like “What did you do?” so it’s implied she causes these injuries herself.
Any time it shows the sisters as adults this is a delusion. Beth eventually comes to realise this but the adult section she really does believe that this is her reality and that Vera is the one suffering a mental break.
Never. Vera asks if Beth is going to let her die alone. She’s not saying she’ll kill herself, teen Vera is getting through to Beth and saying she’s essentially been left to fend for herself in reality and will die alone because of it
The adult timeline is a delusion but in it both girls have severe PTSD, particularly Vera.
In the real/teen timeline, both girls are likely to develop PTSD in the future, again particularly Vera as she was conscious the entire ordeal and Beth seems to have reconciled her fear more towards the end by committing to not living in her delusions
There is someone who is physically male in women’s clothing and a wig. This isn’t further explained so I don’t know whether this person is trans or not.
Age gap implies a relationship. The girls are teenagers (somewhere around 14-16ish) and the attackers are adults. But they’re not in a relationship with them beyond victim/perpetrator
Not much till the end. When they escape and are seemingly rescued by police they are captured again and the police are both shot dead. Then backup arrives to the house a few scenes later where they gun down to assailants
