None of the main characters’ parents are abusive—but it’s confirmed (though not explicitly shown onscreen)—that a young girl is being assaulted by her foster father in episode three.
Theo reports it; he’s arrested and the children are removed from the home.
the house is haunted, and nellie sees a ghost called “the bent neck lady” but is dismissed as being crazy, and whenever she tries to talk to her family about her ongoing sightings, she is asked if she’s off her meds. also, the brother writes a book about the house being haunted (and makes a ton of money off of it, and does meet and greet type things) while still telling nellie that she’s insane for believing the house was haunted.
In episode 3, it is implied that a child is being sexually abused by her foster father. Though it is not shown, the character Theo acts out the scene as if she were the child. It happens when she sees the couch.
There is definitely alcohol misuse, which doesn't mean there is necessarily alcohol addiction. Theo in ep 6 especially uses alcohol to self-medicate/deal her emotions.
The flashbacks in Episode 2 center around one of the characters finding outdoor kittens who ultimately die. Honestly you can skip all the flashback scenes in this episode and it won’t take away from the series.
Yes. 5 kittens die in episode 2. They all die of natural causes. First kitten dies at 24:46 and then a funeral is held and the kitten is shown quite a bit until 27:41. The last 4 kittens die at 34:13. It us a quick flash for only a handful of seconds.
Shirley finds a box of kittens, and all of them end up dying. They dont show any gore but a bug comes out of ones mouth. And the other's eyes and mouth open, but the eyes have no iris nor pupil.
From 33:53-35:15, Theo (a child psychologist and empath who can intuit things by touching people or objects) relives the rape of one of her patients.
The actual event isn’t shown onscreen, but it’s obvious what’s been happening there from her horrified reaction.
From 48:57-50:14, she talks about the situation with Trish; mentioning that this just means the kid will go back into the system— which is, at best, a gamble something like that won’t happen again.
you discover that Theo's child therapy patient is being sexually assaulted by her foster dad, and Theo experiences this through visions and kind of mimes the actions as it's implied what happened, but you don't explicitly see it actually happen.
no actual teeth damaged but there is a scene with a character waking up with her mouth wired shut and she has to cut it open. pretty disturbing in my opinion
Just seconding the other commenter, the dad gets his hand caught in an industrial fan which deeply cuts his hand and fingers. The wound is graphically shown and I believe there is bone exposed, I would count it as mutilation just to be cautious for people.
Two people fall to their deaths, one dying from hitting the ground and another from being hanged. Both are graphic, the first being fairly bloody but with no close-ups of the wound, and the second showing the body drop and the person with their broken neck for around an additional minute after.
Episode 10, timestamp 17:54. Pretty darn gross actually. Definite warning here. Close your eyes for a few seconds after you hear the word eyes. Open again when you hear a gasp.
Another one in 27:08. It starts to happen once you hear the music swell. You can open your eyes again once you hear the scream.
There are a LOT of ghosts that appear as corpses in various states of rot and decay, and there’s parts of an embalming shown. However, there’s not a lot of actual blood or injuries that result in excessive blood (no severed limbs, viscera etc.). The bloodiest part is when (mild spoilers) Hugh sticks his hand in a fan and gets a few deep lacerations. There’s also a pool of blood around a corpse of a person who threw themselves off a balcony.
TL;DR: Even though there’s not a lot of actual blood and gore, I’m marking yes just to be safe, mostly because of all the decaying corpse-like entities and the frequent instances of body horror.
Oh man. In episode 8 there is this one crazy jump scare that will make you pee your pants. If you don't want it to be spoiled for you stop reading.
If you are scared and want to be ready for the jumpscare, it happens in s1ep8 when adult Theo and Shirley are arguing in the car and Nellie's ghost unexpectedly shows up
Not in an in-your-face aggressive way but the mom starts to loose touch with reality and (MAJOR SPOILERS) attempts to murder her own children with poisoned tea. She doesn’t succeed but unfortunately she does kill someone else’s child in the process. One of the ghost’s backstory mirrors this as well.
The characters have many encounters with the supernatural. It’s unclear to both the characters and the viewer much of the time whether these experiences are real or hallucinations.
Young Theo’s reaction when her father touches her reads like a meltdown. Theo’s sensitivity to touch in general hits close to home, even though it is supernatural in her case.
GRAPHIC SUICIDE. You watch it. It's realistic. You see the corpse with obvious Mark's of the suicide.
You see a SECOND suicide after watching in a linear sequence as this person is gaslit into suicide. The victim says "I want to wake up". The gaslighter says, "Then wake up". Then they suicide. I haven't had ideation in over a year, and my brain still flooded with relief and gratitude when the gaslighter gave permission. It is BAD. Be aware. This "waking up" ideation is pretty common and dangerous. It's a turn of phrase they return to for the rest of the season.
There's future gaslighting where an addict is told that the only way to ever really be clean is to be dead.
There is a very sad and disturbing backstory about a stillborn infant. Nothing is shown but it’s very emotional and could be hard for parents who have experienced miscarriages and/or stillbirth.
Human babies are not shown explicitly but referenced in two disturbing backstories about infant death. (Spoilers) There’s also a graphic hallucination with a pregnant woman whose belly rapidly swells and becomes corpse-like.
Some of the children are gaslit by being told that they're just insane when they're seeing ghosts or are talked down to about their mental health struggles.
The dad describes letters written by his daughter to Santa, and he recalls having to make sure that he bought his children the gifts mentioned in the letters. While he doesn’t explicitly spoil Santa, he implies that he is the one buying the gifts and not Santa.
Episode 8, Theo and Shirley are suprised by Nellie's ghost while driving, and spin off the road. They don't really crash though, and it's not a big deal, no one gets hurt
Some graphic cuts to someone with massive head trauma. Graphic scene of embalming a body. There is also a hallucination of a girl's eyes melting out of her skull.
