[Minor spoilers] An authoritarian government manipulating its people and constantly and consistent changing the past by altering and destroying physical evidence. Also, there's "thought crimes" which is a type of manipulation. The people are basically so brainwashed that they could be presented with actual physical evidence and deny reality.
