S5, E12: Merry Evasion.
A woman's home is invaded, her dog Bubba attacks the intruder, and gets shot offscreen. We don't see it happen but we do hear him yelp/whimper when the victim exits the house.
Bubba lives though! Will update if any later episodes do have a dog die.
Can’t recall a situation in which the n-word is used (correct me if I’m wrong) but there have been episodes in which black characters have been harassed and assaulted by the police in a case of racial discrimination.
A gay man gets shot and dies - I don’t remember the episode the best, but I think he sacrificed himself to protect a straight man he had long been enamored with.
In addition, a lesbian antagonist is killed near the end of season 13.
Not so much cops, because cops are sometimes shown to be dirty, but there's a frankly insufferable amount of propaganda to do with US Marines, specifically Navy SEALs. To me, it's the most irritating part of Sam's character, because every time a Marine of SEAL is a suspect, he automatically believes they're innocent.
A major character’s wife dies at one point. They have two children. Also, another major character witnessed his mother’s death at a young age, though it was a memory he repressed (along with anything that happened before it in his life). In addition, his father dies during the series. Jeez, now that I think of it, there’s a lot of characters with dead parents, especially parents who die during the series. There’s a lot of live parents, too, though.
One major character’s backstory includes having a father who abused him and his mother, and then shooting his abusive father in self-defence at a young age.
It’s not shown on screen, but one major character’s backstory includes an abusive father who the character shot in self-defense. In addition, there is a character who grew up in foster care, and the majority of the homes he described having been in were unhealthy environments. In addition, multiple characters were mentioned to have been trained to endure pain as children which is exactly as bad as it sounds.
In season 14 episode 18 there is a room full of bugs that includes close-ups of different bugs, spiders, etc. I would skip the first scene and go straight to the theme song for this episode if bugs are a trigger.
There is a scene in the episode "Unlocked Mind" where the female character is drugged and about to get sexually assaulted, but she regains control in time.
Flashing effects are edited onto almost every gunshot fired in the series. I'm in season 5 and I think I've only seen one shot so far in which they didn’t use the effect.
These flashing effects frequently fill up the entire screen, so anyone sensitive to flashing lights shouldn't be watching.
There are threats of dirty bombs going off, but the danger is always averted. This is a show that’s supposed to realistically be set in modern day LA, so they can’t fail.
