It's 1984, and Michael Jackson is king - even in Waihau Bay, New Zealand. Here we meet Boy, an 11-year-old who lives on a farm with his gran, a goat, and his younger brother, Rocky (who thinks he has magic powers). Shortly after Gran leaves for a week, Boy's father, Alamein, appears out of the blue. Having imagined a heroic version of his father during his absence, Boy comes face to face with the real version-an incompetent hoodlum who has returned to find a bag of money he buried years before. This is where the goat enters.

an animal that does die gets referred to as a dog however, so if you arent clear that the animal wasn't a dog you may be lead to believe so.... so i'm making it very clear that it is not a dog and no dogs are harmed or die in this film
i don't *think* there is gaslighting in this film however the dad does use blackmail a lot to emotionally manipulate boy,, so there is some crossover that could be distressing if gaslighting is difficult to see for you
This comment refers to the Taika Waititi film Boy (2010) where there is definitely child abuse, though not graphic. A young girl is shown with a black eye (it's implied that she was beaten by a parent/relative). In one scene, Boy's father confronts him about (seemingly) stealing money and violently shoves him. Also, Boy and several other kids (all aged 11 and younger) are left unsupervised for at least several days as their grandmother travels to another town to attend a funeral (Boy's father arrives but does not take care of them).
There are 2 photos of snakes, in a shot of a Michael Jackson poster, and later a collage of the same poster. The first shot appears as the boy introduced himself to class at the start of the film (1min 40sec); the second appears just after the boy has told his brother he cannot dig holes because he is not yet a man (50 mins).
a character closes their eyes and falls off a bridge, however its a short distance and into water - the next thing you see is this character safe on shore
In Boy (2010) a woman dies in childbirth (before the start of the film). The birth isn't shown but there is a flashback scene that shows bloody sheets on a bed.
a character shows a sw*stika they drew on the wall as a child, hidden behind a painting - they go on to say "don't get into that n*zi stuff" and then thats the end of it
[SPOILERS] Boy (2010) has a sad yet optimistic ending. It is a funny, sweet film with heavy themes. If you want to see the film end with the children escaping their life of poverty, this does not happen.
what the other comment says, other events are:
- the gang members are seen with minor cuts and scrapes on their faces after getting beaten up which stay on them til the end of the film, the blood is not extreme though
- after a prison escape, there is a jokey scene of someone using a spoon to beat up a guard, in a side-shot you can see a guard holding the spoon at his eye, it's made to look like it stabbed him - there is then about 5 seconds of the guard just bleeding, theres a decent amount of blood but its made to be comical and isn't graphic
