The adventures of 13-year-old, self-centered Anne Boonchuy who is magically transported to the fictitious world of Amphibia, a rural marshland full of frog-people. With the help of an excitable young frog named Sprig, Anne will transform into a hero and discover the first true friendship of her life.
This tv show contains 71 potentially triggering events.
PARENTS: if your child is sensitive, I personally recommend watching True Colours and Olivia and Yunan before your child watches.
The series starts off much less dramatic. :)
NOTE: no the dog doesn’t die, I just wanted to add this somewhere easy to see.
Aldrich was quite emotionally abusive towards his son Andrias, as he discouraged him from forming friendships, believing them to be nothing more than a distraction to his duties as a king, and that they simply were not meant to last.
A child is manipulated, lied to and physically harmed - almost dead - by an adult character in season 2. Same child is implied to have aa bad life back at home, but it's not shown much
in sasha’s theme song takeover they are seen drinking beer, but it’s not an addiction. lady olivia says “if anyone needs me i’ll be in the kitchen drinking…. juice” implying she was drinking alcohol, but it’s not an addiction.
in a few flashback(?) scenes, its told that some character’s parents were attacked when they were younger but theres obviously no gore or anything. if anyone knows of other occasions feel free to comment them!!
There is spiders in most episodes, usually used as jumpscares too so they're not easy to see coming. There is also smaller/more sylized spiders in longer scenes.
In "Olivia & Yunan," Marcy is forcibly restrained in a chair before and while being tortured. In both "If You Give a Frog a Cookie" and "Escape to Amphibia," the Plantars end up strapped to tables with the intention of being experimented on, though nothing ever happens. In "The Beginning of the End," Anne, Sasha, and the amphibians with them spend most of the ending of the episode restrained with prehensile cables. At the very beginning of "All In," the same characters are again being restrained by their hands and feet before they escape.
anne slices sasha’s cheek in the s1 finale. some blood, nothing gross. it was a deep cut, as shown by the scar that is prominently visible in every scene with sasha.
sasha also gets her back sliced open in all in, and there is blood shown for the rest of the episode
There is now! (SPOILERS) Grime gets his arm cut off by a scythe. No blood, but you see the silhouette of his arm falling limply to the ground. A bit unnerving.
Anne's arm is broken pretty violently (but in no way gorily) by tax toads in "Toad Tax." The arm is not visibly broken and there is a cutaway the moment it happens, but she's seen clutching it in pain and later has it in a cast. Marcy also breaks her leg offscreen in her theme song takeover.
Not exactly, but there are scenes about Anne getting dental work on Earth and being loopy from painkillers or sedation... because her teeth got messed up from poor dental hygiene during her many months in Amphibia.
In the episode "Olivia & Yunan," Marcy is tortured while strapped to a chair and screaming in pain, eventually passing out. The scene is pretty shocking and disturbing, especially compared to the usual content of the show.
Marcy falls down some stairs in s2e10 "A Sleepover To End All Sleepovers". It's briefly shown and then the show cuts to black as audio of her falling plays.
Though he is rescued, in the Season 2 finale, "True Colors", Sprig is dropped from a window by King Andrias with the intent of killing him.
EDIT: In the Season 3 episode "All In", during Anne's battle with Andrias, she falls multiple times while being knocked down or out of the sky. Several times she hits the ground or the top of a building and one time she flies through several buildings, and she expresses pain, however no injury is shown. It can still be startling or frightening.
Polly (with Anne and Sprig) was being abducted by numerous beasts in Amphibia, by some people too (i.e. the cannibals in A Night at the Inn who tried, even if they failed for Polly), and the Plantar kids are (with Hop Pop) abducted two times by humans, namely Dr. Frakes and Mr. X.
One of the main characters, who's 13, is stabbed with a sword and falls down on s2. It's later revealed, in the s3 intro, that she survived, but the scene can be very upsetting.
Sprig is briefly held hostage by King Andrias in True Colors as a way to force the heroes to hand over the Calamity Box, only to get dropped out of the castle.
not in the usual sense, but most s1 episodes feature a fun normal adventure and then a giant spider with fire teeth or something pops out of nowhere for some reason
In the second segment of S3 E7, titled "Olivia & Yunan", a member of the main cast of characters, Marcy Wu, is possessed by an entity that is referred to as "The Core". She is unwillingly strapped to an electric-chair type contraption and The Core's conscience is downloaded into her brain through a helmet and multiple wires that are plugged into her limbs. She is also electrocuted in the process and screams in agony. This scene can be very upsetting for viewers, squeamish or not. EDIT: This possession remains a plotline until All In, where Sasha cuts the wire keeping the Core's helmet connected to Marcy. The result of this includes electricity and Darcy screaming, supposedly in pain, and can be just as disturbing as the initial possession in Olivia & Yunan. The Core takes control of the moon in the finale, however the moon isn't a sentient being, so it doesn't count as possession. The Core is also shown to be able to influence Andrias through his crown.
In S2 E6, "Marcy at the Gates", Sprig is eaten by a creature known as a Barbariant. The creature promptly spits him out after Marcy allows herself to also be eaten to save him, being regurgitated as well.
In "Escape to Amphibia," a character is threatened with a syringe and the needle is shown fairly detailed. In "Olivia & Yunan," a character is shown with tubes being pulled out of her arms similarly to IV lines, and later has more tubes inserted into her limbs that clearly have parts on the end that go in further than flush with her skin.
At the end of "Reunion," one of the main characters appears to attempt suicide by letting herself fall off a tower. She is caught and ends up unconscious but relatively unharmed, but the scene could be triggering regardless.
Marcy is confirmed autistic, even though she wasn’t intentionally written to be, and tbh I think it’s quite good representation of level 1 autism. She’s a bit stereotypical (loves puzzles, struggles to make friends, clever), but generally still quite accurate. Her storyline about being rejected for her interests and her struggling with change fit in well with many autistic people’s experiences.
she is a bit stereotypical and does make mistakes, but I would in no way say it’s misrepresented. If anything, I think it’s quite good representation. Not perfect, but good.
while they are not canonically mentally ill, a character exhibits suicidal behaviour and shows strong traits of mental illness (bpd specifically) and is very violent.
there are moments in the show that can be seen as dissociation, depersonalization, or derealization. most notably in the series finale "the hardest thing"
It’s not DID, but there’s a consciousness made up of amphibia’s “greatest minds” and it’s evil. It feels like it has similarities to DID, such as different ‘characters’, voices, using plural “we” (“we can’t decide” or something) and there’s mention that the character whose been kinda possessed by this consciousness is in “a little (box or room) up here”.
So short answer, no, DID isn’t in it, however, a character with some resemblances to DID and similar plural conditions, is evil which could be triggering or offensive to some people.
EDIT: when I say characters I mean different characters bc it’s a show, like different people, I know they’re called alters when it’s DID but this isn’t DID.
some of the slapstick body humor triggers my misophonia at which point i just skip or mute, its not that often and usually skipping stuff doesnt affect anything since a considerable amount of the show is filler
No but a character tries to save her friends by sacrificing herself (throwing herself off a cliff) and she's resqued before anything happens but might be triggering nonetheless
In "All In," the Plantars' trauma from the herons that killed Sprig and Polly's parents is explicitly discussed as such. It's possible that the main trio have PTSD as well, but this is at the most only slightly hinted at in the show, like Anne remembering the events of "Reunion" during "Handy Anne."
a bisexual character tries to kill herself, but fails. a character heavily implied to be sapphic does die but is brought back. you are led to believe a character widely believed to be sapphic is dead, but she turns out to be alive
kinda? i honestly think the writers didn’t realise the implications. hop pop is dating a woman named sylvia. sylvia’s granddaughter is dating sprig, hop pop’s grandson.
A statue of Santa Claus is turned into a killer robot during Season 3's Christmas episode by King Andrias in another plot to kill Anne. When the robot is destroyed, a child asks his father if Santa will be okay, to which the father replies that he won't with a smile.
The alternative to cars in this show is snails. A character who doesn't know how to drive drives off a cliff and lands in a forest. No damage to the characters or the snail.
It's a kids' cartoon, so it's extremely light on blood, let alone gore. A character gets a cut on her cheek, which is shown to be red, but without any running blood, in "Reunion." Same character gets a large cut on her back in "All In," but it's only shown for a few seconds, and not realistic at all. Possibly the goriest moment would actually be in "All In" when a character is revealed to be a cyborg after his body is partially torn open, revealing mechanical inner workings that greatly resemble organs, but even that's not much.
There's a large superweapon capable of creating massive explosions that annihilate huge areas and produces giant mushroom clouds. It's not ever stated to be nuclear, but could be interpreted as such.
The series starts off much less dramatic. :)
NOTE: no the dog doesn’t die, I just wanted to add this somewhere easy to see.
