the protagonist, terri hooley, and some minor characters also use drugs throughout. The main character wears a badge with a picture of a marijuana leaf on it for much of the film. weed is smoked in an early scene (beginning from the line "She laughed. He wasn't joking"). a friend of the protagonist's is a drug dealer and, later in the film when they are reunited in London, the protagonist snorts an unnamed drug (possibly speed, cocaine, or some other stimulant) and experiences a (stylised) drug trip. drugs aren't an important part of the plot however.

the main character is a heavy drinker who is warned to cut back by a friend. it is implied that his drinking is affecting his relationship with his wife and his ability to achieve his goals. in one scene it's implied that he is suffering from delirium tremens and can't hold a baby for fear of dropping them. when his friend warns him that he drinks too much, he replies that "everyone [they] know" drinks too much. it's ambiguous whether this is said out of defensiveness or if it's meant to be a real reflection of the drinking habits of his friends. Many scenes in the film occur in pubs or when alcohol has been taken, and many characters drink.

Early in the film, a minor character is kidnapped by paramilitaries who tie him naked to a chair and cut his hair with what look like hedge clippers or shears, leaving a bloody gash on his head. the character comments that one paramilitary told him he was lucky it wasn't a bullet.

the main character loses an eye as a child (to an arrow from a toy bow and arrow set) and later has to reinstall his prosthetic eye after it has fallen out. he also takes the eye out and shows it to a security camera. his eye isn't cut or gouged at.
