Not intentional abandonment. A pet dog’s owner (who lived alone and had no family) dies and the dog as a result subsequently becomes a stray wandering around the city on its own. He is adopted by the protagonist and his friends when they find him.
In Maiko (the little girl)‘s social link, she says her father hit her when she asked why her parents were getting divorced. When he mother found out, she says Malik deserved it for “being annoying and sticking her nose where it doesn’t belong”
A main character forgives another student who was bullying them after they apologise and stop bullying them but there’s no instances of forgiving a domestic abuser.
Also there’s recorded camera footage you can see of Aigis sneaking into the protagonists room, standing next to his bed and watching him sleep for several hours
Female characters are injured and KO’d during fight scenes similarly to male characters but there’s never any point where it’s excessively brutal or feels like women in particular are being targeted by the narrative
Characters take drugs but there isn’t a point where someone is drugged without their knowledge. That said, there is a point in the story where a Shadow uses supernatural powers on the main characters to cause them to black out for an unspecified period of time in a similar vein to being drugged
In the femc route of portable, ken who is a child is a romance option. In the same route an adult man tries asking the main character (a minor) on a date in the future
There is a point where a Shadow causes the Protagonist and Yukari to black out, then once the protagonist recovers, it tries to manipulate him through a voice in his head to have sex with Yukari while she is still blacked out, however the protagonist refuses to do so and they both recover fine with no sexual assault taking place
A character is said to be repeatedly cutting themselves on their hand however the blood or scarring is not visible due to the low quality models.
EDIT: The Blood is visible in the remake.
While cannibalism is definitely not a part of either the main or any side plots, iirc there *may* be Personas the player character can obtain that *may* reference cannibalism in their Compendium entries, as they are based on monsters and figures from real-world mythologies that may or may not feature that in their backstories. However, this brief mention would be the most that this concept gets referenced, and this part of the Compendium entry is not required reading (the default page lists the Persona's stats, elemental weaknesses and resistances, and whatever skills they had when they were most recently registered).
During the second full moon, Mitsuru is held up really high in the air by her neck and chocked by a giant Shadow. She is rescued before she is killed. Chidori is almost chocked to death by her own Persona before she is given suppressants to stop it from killing her.
In the portable version (and the version rereleased to most modern consoles in 2023) The Little Girl from the Hanged Man social link becomes trapped in the dark hour and you have to rescue her before the deadline.
[SPOILERS] Shinji jumps in front of a bullet to save Ken, which kills him. Chidori uses her power to save Junepi after he is fatally shot which comes at the comes of her own life. The protagonist uses all their power to stop the god of death, which results in them becoming very sick for a week before dying. Several characters comment on how unnaturally pale the protagonist looks prior to their death.
In order to max out "Social Links", the protagonist is forced into a romantic any girl he starts a friendship with, without any options to break up with other romantic partners.
In the Sun Social Link, you are told a story he is making about a pink alligator. It’s mentioned in the story that the alligator intentionally induces vomiting by drinking swamp water after accidentally eating his friend. There is no visual to this, just text.
In the portable version, if you play as the Female MC and pick Elizabeth as your female attendant, the final hang-out event ends with implied sex. This happens regardless if you are in a relationship or not. This also happens if you play as the Male MC, however since you can’t date males, this is not bisexual cheating - Just regular cheating which isn’t any better to be fair.
The main character falls into a coma for a week after awakening his/her persona. A minor villain is also hospitalized assuming they survive. Shinjiro is put into a coma for the rest of the game after he gets shot if the female protagonist maxes out his social link.
Chidori regularly self-harms to the point that the other characters had to actively remove all sharp objects in the hospital room she was kept in because she kept doing it and she still finds a way to do it after this anyway. Also, characters in this game summon their personas by shooting themselves in the head. The guns are fake and they aren’t actually being harmed, but considering how extremely frequent persona summoning Is, being THE most frequent action performed in this game, and that there’s no way to skip this animation, this game should be avoided completely if you are sensitive at all to this type of imagery. (Also the opening scene of the game is Yukari holding a gun to her own head and crying before dropping it without this context being given for several hours after this scene, which may also be triggering)
The leader of Strega, who is dying because of the experiments performed on him, aims to bring about the end of the world out of shire spite as a sort of “If I’m going down, I’m taking as many people down with me as possible” mentality
Main plot revolves around a supernatural point in time called “The Dark Hour” slated after midnight where the sky hue turns green, most people turn into coffins, supernatural monsters attack and the school transforms into a giant unstable tower that serves as a conduit for the supernatural causes.
Ken, a kid in elementary school, verbally stated that he considered committing suicide several times after the death of his mother. [SPOILERS] It’s also heavily implied he was going to commit suicide after he kills Shinji, but he never does once he dies.
Blatant and frequent suicide imagery throughout the game, several characters threaten or contemplate suicide, two characters jump off a bridge and are thought to be dead for some time, and one character commits suicide with a grenade offscreen.
At the start of the game, the protagonist is being constantly watched by his dorm mates, even while sleeping, with cameras throughout the dorms. SEES are being watched by Strega without knowing. Optional recordings of party members doing private activities in their rooms, unaware that the cameras are always recording, can be viewed.
The Moon social link character (for the male protagonist, they are replaced by another character for the female protagonist who does not have the same issue) is mocked by others for his weight and eating disorder.
In most versions, the male teenage protagonist can date your teacher (albeit when they first met online they're unaware of the age difference) ,but usually that's about it although YMMV on the immortal characters such as Elizabeth...HOWEVER in Portable (which is also the version on PC and Switch) the 16 to 17-year-old Female MC can date Ken who is 10-11. Granted like all romance this is optional, nobody's forcing you ,but still!
As with all persona games, some of the Personas are based on religious figures or deities from various religions such as Christianity and Buddhism. The protagonists ultimate persona is based on Jesus Christ but has a pretty difficult requirement in order to obtain.
Portable is infamous for indirectly confirming that the conclusion of a romantic side quest is coitus. And most of the characters are teenagers so it’s only natural to draw this conclusion
After Reaching Rank 10 with most female social links, it’s heavily implied you have sex offscreen with some suggestive dialogue. There’s an optional cutscene where it’s implied a character mistakenly assumes another is using a vibrator when they go to their room door and hear laughing and a buzzing noise coming from inside, and they immediately walk away.
Suicide and Death are integral thematic and plot elements to the game. The games tagline is even “Memento Mori: Remember you are mortal, remember one day you will die.” A prominent idea presented throughout the game is how most people don’t even think about the possibility of their death until directly confronted with that fact. Being faced with the possibility of death also causes multiple characters to reevaluate themselves and their lives.
The game is very irreverent toward many world religions and mythologies, since real-world mythological/theological beings are your Pokémon.
EDIT: Mitsuru also literally says that Santa isn’t real if you talk to her on December 19th. Didn’t remember that from my first play-through.
The main way of summoning "Personas" or your characters' monster summons is by the characters shooting themselves in the head with a fake gun. This method and animation is shown nearly every time a Persona is summoned, especially in battle. Two main characters are also shot and killed by separate villains later in the story.
