The Host
Movie • 2006 • Drama
ReportGang-du is a dim-witted man working at his father's tiny snack bar near the Han River. Following the dumping of gallons of toxic waste in the river, a giant mutated squid-like appears and begins attacking the populace. Gang-du's daughter Hyun-seo is snatched up by the creature and he and his family are taken into custody by the military, who fear a virus spread by the creature. In detention, Gang-du receives a phone call from Hyun-seo, who is not dead, merely trapped in a sewer. With his family to assist him, he sets off to find Hyun-seo.

The US Army basically gaslights the whole of Korea by saying there's a virus when there isn't one. A U.S. doctor admits this in front of Gang-du, assuming he won't understand, but then the other doctors proceed to operate on him anyway.

We're told that a man's mother left for good when he was a child, and that his father was away from home much of the time due to having to work a lot. The father feels that his son was neglected and believes that the son was permanently damaged by the childhood malnutrition caused by having to take care of himself to a large extent. So it's more a question of neglect than of abuse as such.

I don't remember seeing it happen explicitly, but considering what happens to lots of people in the movie, there must be bones breaking all over the place. Also, we see a whole pile of human skeletal parts.

I did jump: after the incident, when they first show the disinfectant cars patrolling the river, two men gets out of one of the cars. One goes close to the river, and when he turns back towards the car, the monster suddenly swings down and eats him. There're a few other instances when the monster acts as a minor jumpscare, but at least it doesn't have the cliche loud horror-music jump.

Gang-du is all but stated to have some kind of developmental disability due to poor childhood nutrition. Other characters repeatedly call him stupid for his lapses in judgment. Gang-du's father chastises them for calling him stupid.

Hard to say what kills the people who fall into the river or are dragged under water. People go in water, people die; if it's not drowning, it's something else. There are no close-ups of people drowning, there are no underwater shots, and I'm pretty sure we don't see someone struggling to come up for air.
