The dog never dies, but a ‘demonic’ dog plays a large part in the film and in the opening scene it is shot. It appears to not hurt the dog at all, but there is a visible wound for a moment. Later on the dog is adopted by a character, and many side characters threaten the dog and suggest hurting it. This is never acted upon.
There’s a very uncanny scene where the dog vomits maggots at a main character before collapsing into a pile of maggots- but it’s implied that the dog is in some way demonic as opposed to possessed or sick.
