It is implied heavily in the beginning of the film but not shown in actions or in bruises on Ethan(the child). At around 54:09 Ethan is slapped in the face by his father, it is very fast and only lasts a second.
The main character does not have a "pills problem." She takes her medication as prescribed. In fact, she tells the doctor she doesn't like its side effects.
There is a scene where a cat has an apparently hurt paw, but it does not show how the cat's paw was hurt, or share any details on how it was hurt, or show the injury.
A character is cut on the lower leg by a pursuer, the same character is violently and graphically stabbed in the cheek with a garden tool, but they live. They are later shown with treated, covered wounds.
Scene where a character is oddly not home for a long time, and when checked on, something falls from ceiling that seriously made me thing it would be him hung, but it wasnt.
The instance of a finger getting cut is minor enough that it wouldn't be defined as mutilation, but yes, there is a wound to a finger in a scene where someone is washing a wine glass and breaks it.
I would describe a good portion of the movie as psychological torture. That said, there is no physical torture… unless you count the multiple stabbings.
SPOILER- Anna’s husband is dead the whole time, he died in a car accident. Jane, the mother next door, is supposedly murdered by her husband during the movie.
