While video chatting one night, six high school friends receive a Skype message from a classmate who killed herself exactly one year ago. At first they think it's a prank, but when the girl starts revealing the friends' darkest secrets, they realize they are dealing with something out of this world, something that wants them dead.
This movie contains 48 potentially triggering events.
Photos of the characters smoking marijuana out of a bong are shown, and there are photos of characters incapacitated after drinking heavily throughout the film. One of them is cited to be drunk onscreen, though he isn't shown drinking
No shaving is shown, but there are various torture sequences where characters are cut. One of them puts his hand in a blender and another impales himself in the eye. Both are projected pretty heavily and brief, so they're easy to skip if you know what to look for (see my notes on Hand mutilation & Eye mutilation sections!)
No seizures are shown, but one character dies on camera and the others speculate that it may have been a seizure, as she had a history of them in the past. It is proven to not have been a seizure, but the conversation goes on for a while. This is early in the movie and involves the first death.
Both physical and psychological torture happen throughout this movie. If physical torture is triggering to you, there's a long and suspenseful moment involving the screen freezing on each character before they're harmed and the torture scenes are brief, so it should be easy to skip or look away. However, psychological torture is constantly present-- it is the theme of this movie, as a girl who committed suicide torments her cyberbullies from the afterlife by forcing them to reveal their secrets, turn on each other, etc. so this may not be the movie for you if that is a trigger
One character is killed via an object impaling his eye. This scene is graphic, but brief, and like the other torture sequences in the film, it has a scene leading up to it that signals what's going to happen-- when Blair tells Laura that Mitch is the one who posted the video, the screen freezes, and then this scene occurs.
There is bodily trauma in the movie including a scene where (SPOILERS) one of the characters, Ken shreds his hand in a blender but i wouldn't say it is excessive
Sort of. The whole movie consists of minors, some of whom are sexually active with each other. But it's done in a way that's realistic to teens their age and not exploitative.
This is a big plot point and can be very triggering. The main character is revealed to have cheated on her boyfriend with another manor character, who was his best friend. Multiple pictures and a (brief and non-graphic, but very clearly sexual) video are shown of the act. It is revealed that they had this affair multiple times, and a lot of emotional discussion is had.
The physical act of possession is not depicted graphically, but possession does occur for almost every character. There are multiple brief yet graphic torture scenes depicting the characters killing themselves in a variety of painful ways, caused by the apparition of a deceased girl whom they bullied possessing them for revenge.
There is no vomit. The votes are polarized because there is a scene where one character is killed by a hot curling iron being shoved down her throat, but she does not vomit. There is some blood that can be seen coming out of her mouth, but no vomit. There is no gagging as she appears already dead. If you want to skip this scene to be safe, it occurs after a heavily projected scene where Jess is being pursued by Laura in her bathroom. There is no triggering audio, just her friends screaming. The scene is pretty brief, but is followed by a photograph being posted of the scene once more afterwards.
First suicide is by gunshot to the head, not cutting. Other suicides (in order) include drinking bleach, hand and throat in a blender, another gunshot to the head, curling iron down the throat, and stabbing.
Nobody talks to the viewer and there’s no implication that the film can harm the viewer. But there is a lot directed toward the camera since it’s video calls. If you watch it on a computer, it might look like the movie is really happening on your screen since it’s a screen captured movie. The opening studio logo intentionally glitches, which plays into this. But it never directly suggests the movie is happening on the viewer’s real computer.
The opening scene is panning up a teen girl’s legs as she teases her boyfriend over video chat. This character has her legs in frame quite a bit for a movie that all takes place in Zoom windows. But she is also a character outside of that.
We get a hint that a deceased girl may have been sexually abused by an uncle of hers as a child, but it isn't actually said, and nothing hinting at incest is shown in visuals.
The movie opens with a strip tease. The main character unbuttons her shirt and isn't wearing a bra underneath, but the most you see is her underwear. Later, there is a video of the beginning phases of two people having sex, the most sexual thing that happens is the guy removes the girl's pants and kisses her legs. It lasts no more than 10 seconds.
The main character is caught for what she did and is attacked much like the girl she had harassed before. It ends with the undead spirit of said girl suddenly closing the laptop, jumpscaring (and presumably killing) her.
