A plot line throughout the seasons is that one of the main protagonists was in the military and went through extremely harsh private training, including borderline verbal abuse, with his officer at war, who (SPOILERS!) he later fights and kills. We see this happen through flashbacks. Later this character opens a karate studio and teaches his students in a similar harsh way, using verbal and some physical abuse as tactics.
