Jesus Camp
Movie • 2006 • Documentary
ReportA growing number of Evangelical Christians believe there is a revival underway in America that requires Christian youth to assume leadership roles in advocating the causes of their religious movement. Jesus Camp follows children at a Christian summer camp as they hone their "prophetic gifts" and are schooled in how to "take back America for Christ." The film is a first-ever look into an intense training ground that recruits born-again Christian children to become an active part of America's political future.

I wouldn't call it true gaslighting, but the way adults respond to the children having questions or disagreeing with their faith is potentially disturbing.

Some would consider the intense religious indoctrination represented to be child abuse. Several of the kids featured have since referred to that experience as abusive or traumatic.

Children tell a ghost story and are reprimanded by an adult who reminds them that scary stories aren't in line with the camp's faith.

Youth ministers talk pretty heavily about abortions at one point, passing around anatomically incorrect models of fetuses and talking about dead babies. This may be intense for people with trauma related to miscarriages or abortion.

It’s not outright, but it often underlies certain Evangelical beliefs. At one point, children are holding an Israeli flag while pledging allegiance to the Christian flag and to the Bible, which I believe is subtle antisemitism. Also, the idea of America being founded on “Judeo-Christian” values is discussed in a purely Christian context
