Episode 1, Minute 7:09 to 7:33: During a flashback, July (the protagonist) describes her life, starting at the very beginning with her conception. July is the daughter of a slave woman (Kitty) and Kitty's white male master. What You See: The slave master exits Kitty's living quarters, fiddling with the top button of his pants, and the camera cuts to Kitty lying on a bed. The narration never uses the word "rape" or "sexual assault," but it's heavily implied that is what's happening.

Episode 1, Minute 10:20 to 12:55: During a flashback, July (the protagonist) describes how she came to arrive at the sugar plantation she currently resides. When she was a little girl no more than 5 to 7, Caroline (the mistress of the plantation) spots her and thinks her so cute she decides to take July back to the sugar plantation with her. July's mother, being a slave, cannot do anything to stop the abduction.

Episode 1, Minute 7:34 to 7:45: During a flashback, July (the protagonist) describes her life, starting at the very beginning with her conception. Kitty (July's mother) is heard calling out to another slave named Miss Rose—presumably to help her deliver the baby. Nothing is shown, but you can hear Kitty screaming and straining. When the camera does come back to Kitty, she is simply lying on her bed, and newborn July is nicely swaddled and being cradled in the arms of Miss Rose.

This entire miniseries centers around the life of a Jamaican slave woman living on a sugar plantation in the early nineteenth century. So, yes, there is A LOT of racism.
