There is no on-screen parental death, but the death of two characters' mother prior to the start of the game is central to the plot. Their father does not appear either, so he could be assumed dead. Nancy also mentions her own mother's death.

**divided into mild spoilers - when the scenes occur first as a warning, and after the spoiler, what jumps out**

1. When Nancy enters the bathhouse for the first time, a cutscene will begin and show Nancy approaching the mirror [SPOILER] the lights will flicker and the ghost will appear in the reflection, then rush at the mirror and break the glass.

2. When you have solved a puzzle on the wall of the bathhouse and look through the opening [SPOILER] you will see two characters talking to each other. One suddenly rushes towards the opening you are looking through and you see a close up of their face as though they are about to see you snooping, but do not see you.

3. After you have solved the biggest nonogram and finished looking at the things to look at unlocked by the puzzle [SPOILER] - once you turn around the ghost will be Right Behind you and push Nancy into the bath

[SPOILERS]

The mother of two on-screen characters is dead off-screen prior to the game. Part of the plot involves learning what happened to her, and it is discovered that she slipped and fell in the baths and drowned. However, due to some letters implying that this character was depressed and seemed to predict her death, it is a common interpretation among fans that it may have been more intentional. As elements of the text could be read this way it is something to keep in mind, and especially something to know if you plan to look up or participate in discussions about the game after the fact.
