They drank it right after the death of someone they loved, while reflecting on their actions which they feel were related to the death. So there is the implication that it was done with the hope of a fatal overdose.

The characters don't experience claustrophobia, but the entire movie takes place in one small room (other than flashbacks) so the overall feel of the movie is claustrophobic. Something else that's important to note, the reason it takes place in one room is because they are trapped. There are many scenes where the characters desperately attempt to escape, sometimes injuring themselves in the process.
