Based on an inspiring true story, a small-town news reporter (Krasinski) and a Greenpeace volunteer (Barrymore) enlist the help of rival superpowers to save three majestic gray whales trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle. ‘Big Miracle’ is adapted from the nonfiction book ‘Freeing the Whales: How the Media Created the World’s Greatest Non-Event’ by Tom Rose.
This movie contains 1 potentially triggering events.
There are sled dogs shown, but none of them die. The YES numbers reflect when this website only had the choice of DOES THE DOG DIE, before it expanded its collection of possible trigger moments.
No physical abuse shown, but I know that some people are against sled dogs (working and racing), and there are a few scenes of working sled dogs at work. They are brief.
The opening scene shows the Inupiat people tracking/hunting whales and teaching kids about how to hunt for food. One whale pops up out of the water, and a hunter is shown throwing his spear before the scene cuts. We don’t see or hear the whale killed, but it is assumed.
BIG SPOILER (STOP READING NOW TO AVOID): there is a sad death off-screen for one of the three trapped whales, who succumbs to illness and never resurfaces. We don’t see him die nor do we see his dead body. We just know the other whales moved on, a boy hears the two remaining whales make grieving noises, and there is a sweet moment where all the people grieve together while the Inupiat leader sings a prayer. It’s a sad moment, but I still think animal lovers should watch this movie, because it really is a beautiful true story about so many different groups of people who came together over this cause to Save The Whales at the end of the ‘80s.
Chopper pilot’s eye lid gets frozen shut due to the extreme wind chill when flying. Not graphic or gory, and the steps taken to help him results in, arguably, the funniest moment in the film.
One of the whales has pneumonia, so his breathing sounds really congested/stuffed up during a few scenes. Plus, there are a few tense moments where the whales are struggling to find open holes in the iced ground so that they can pop up and breathe.
