But Im a Cheerleader
Movie • 1999 • Comedy
ReportMegan is an all-American girl. A cheerleader. She has a boyfriend. But Megan doesn't like kissing her boyfriend very much. And she's pretty touchy with her cheerleader friends. Her conservative parents worry that she must be a lesbian and send her off to "sexual redirection" school, where she must, with other lesbians and gays learn how to be straight.

Kind of, towards the tail end of the film some of the characters don’t say goodbye to their parents. Also, one of the main characters leaves without saying goodbye but returns.

Parents sending their kids to conversion therapy camp / threatening not to let their children come home if they don’t complete the program.
The relationship between the leader of the camp and her (closeted?) gay son is emotionally and verbally abusive.

Nothing is shown on screen but there is one scene where it is stated that a character was molested as a child and that it is the reason for her being gay. Was very triggering for me personally.

There is probably a good case for calling conversion "therapy" torture. Whithin the "therapy", there is no physical torture, though.

Most of the characters are supposed to be minors themselves (under 18), so there is some fantasy from the main characters about other characters (namely the main character and her cheerleader peers). There is no sexualization of minors from adults though.
Unless you count the sex simulation therapy. The counselors force the characters to dry hump on a bed to simulate penetration. This is done to "show the campers how to have straight sex," so there is some argument to be had about the sexualization of LGBTQ+ people (specifically these minors).

There is a character who is heavily implied to be trans masc (although they don’t directly say it), who introduces themself by their birth name. Whether this was their choice isn’t clear but it could potentially be triggering.

The conversion therapy facility is similar to an institution, particularly in the group therapy scenes. However it does not employ physical restraints, padded rooms, or forced medication, and residents are able to sneak out fairly easily.

not quite sure why people are voting no... there is a tokenized jewish character who's identity is the butt of the joke in several movie scenes including his introduction and later on in a parent conference another parent makes an antisemitic remark towards him. this movie is satirical and mocking how other movies portray jews.

One character is in conversion “therapy” for lesbianism, but they are very insistent that they actually do like men. The character is very masculine and can be interpreted as a gay trans man. This character is subjected to the same strict female gender role as the other characters in “therapy” for lesbianism.

Gay and lesbian stereotypes abound, but they are somewhat tame compared to other 90s/early y2k movies.
The main character is a femme lesbian, which was not a common “gay” stereotype back then (hence the movie title); however, she is sent to conversion camp due to little “gay” things like being vegetarian and hanging Melissa Ethridge posters.
One of the gay boys displays some stereotypical gay behaviors (wearing a boa, dancing, using “gay coded” language) but he is a super likable character and the portrayal isn’t disrespectful.
I think the most harmful misrepresentation is that all the kids are forced to come up with their “root” - ie, what “made” them gay. It ranges from serious things like abuse and family dynamics to things like sharing locker rooms with other boys in sports.

There is the simulated sex scene that dresses the characters up in white body suits with leaves on their private areas. Besides that, there is no actual nudity in this movie. Just sometimes a focus on boobs and butts as the main character is fantasizing about women.

While I don't remember any boy or man ridiculed for crying, there is the enforcement of gender/sex stereotypes (women cleaning, men being tough). It's all played as a joke by the movie since this is a satire.
