Considered an immigrant, common and plain, Catherine de Medici is married into the 16th century French court as an orphaned teenager expected to bring a fortune in dowry and produce many heirs, only to discover that her husband is in love with an older woman, her dowry is unpaid and she’s unable to concieve. Yet, only with her intelligence and determination, she manages to keep her marriage alive and masters the bloodsport that is the monarchy better than anyone else, ruling France for 50 years.
This tv show contains 22 potentially triggering events.
Catherine's dressmaker is executed by being drawn and quartered. They show at least part of it on screen with audio as well. I covered my eyes, so I don't know exactly how much was shown.
Catherine and Henri are forced to have sex in front of the court after they are married. Neither of them are particularly interested in performing the act. Catherine is obviously upset afterwards and yelled at by Henri to get out.
While confiding in young Catherine, Diane specifically says that her husband raped her on their wedding night. No other mention is made of it and they move on.
Not mutilation, but in episode 1 a man proves teenage Catherine in a room full of people to confirm that she is a virgin. At the end of episode 4 two guards are forced to drop their pants and expose themselves while another character criticizes their size.
There is discussion throughout season one of the time in Francis and Henri's childhoods when they were imprisoned by Spain and the king, their father, refused to pay the ransom.
A dead woman is shown with her throat slit around 5:00-5:10 in episode 2. Henri stabs a man in the throat around 43:25-43:55 in episode 2. He doesn't die immediately.
No hospital yet but the pope has a medical procedure done about 15 minutes into episode 1. He has an "abscess in his exit." They lance it and you don't see it but you hear it squelch and see the bloody scalpel.
Within the first 10 minutes, young Catherine is slapped and then beaten with a switch by an old nun. A few minutes later, a mercenary also slaps her across the face.
No, but almost. In the final few minutes of the episode, a man is seen approaching a horse with a hot poker with clear intent to hurt it, however, the horse quite comically kicks the crap out of the guy and he is seen flying across the room.
In episode 3 from around 49:20-50:05 a man is drawn and quartered by four horses. His limbs are shown ripping off. In episode 7 a prisoner is tortured by having a wooden spike driven into his eye to see if it can be safely removed. They hammer it in while he's screaming, then pull it out, and it's quite graphic.
At the beginning of episode 3, a maid is shown with facial burns and a missing eye from a kitchen explosion. In episode 7 the king is injured in a joust and gets a shaft of wood through his eye. He's still alive and it's shown up close, very graphic. They also torture a prisoner by driving a wooden spike into his eye to see if it can be safely removed. They hammer it in while he's screaming. Again, very graphic.
Throughout their marriage, Henri is consistently cheating on Catherine with Diane. At some point, they come to an arrangement and the definition of cheating becomes more nebulous, but Catherine is never truly happy with the relationship and consistently wishes for more time with Henri and for his mistress to leave.
IMPORTANT NOTE - I am crafting while watching, because I, too, am emetophobic. I'm afraid to pay full attention, so I may miss quiet stuff that happens in the background.
E101 SAFE
E102, around 15:30. After Catherine says "what was the cause?" No active v*, but it's around his mouth as we get a clip of a man die of poisoning.
E103, there is another poisoning, but no v*. Catherine gags during the execution, and then v*s when she gets to her room (about 50 minutes in). You can still see it on the floor for the rest of the scene. Once the scene changes, you're safe.
E104, about 19:15. They're eating & talking about laws. Right after one of them says "consider me on the side of what's right for this country", the king v*s. Some audio, but not too bad.I didn't really notice it (I'm also crafting) until on-screen characters comment on it. I didn't see the act itself, and while I rewound to give the line before, I wasn't about to look up. You can see it on his mouth the rest of the scene.
E105 - about 45. After the dude walks out of the tavern, he's sick on the ground outside. Audio & visual. When he says, "you're offering your protection?" You're safe. (About 30 seconds later) Though, after the other guy responds, Mr. Barf sniffles then spits, if that bothers you.
E106 - SAFE
E107 - about 11:30. After the woman says, "we must celebrate the miracle", the dude you expect to split blood does so all over his dinner. About 44:40, in the carriage. Not actual v*, but could be triggering. Dude leans down and coughs into a handkerchief. When he comes back up, his lower face is covered in blood.
S108 - the carriage scene is repeated in an extended version at about 3:30. The coughing only last a couple of seconds, but you do see blood on his face every time they flash to him through the scene.
Barely 5 minutes in, in a flashback, Catherine's syphilitic father goes crazy and smashes his head into a wall, and then her mother deliberately falls from a window ledge to her death.
