I will mention two things:
At the start of the game, the dog is sort of abused before you rescue it. I can't remember how, but I don't think it is anything severe.
Also, you can pick up collectibles known as History Relics where animals are referred to as food, from sheep to horses. To show the depravation of the wasteland, of course.

Children are used as slaves in the tunnels I think? Where you find Glory later in the game. Nothing bad happens on screen, but the children are attached to cords and they crawl in and out of these hole things.

No horses in the game but you can pick up a History Relic that mentions a threat about taking horses to a glue factory and I think one about them being a potential food source.

At the start you meet a dog. It doesn't get abandoned throughout the game, as far as I remember, and you can still access the dog post-game.
Also, you can find a History Relic that is a letter from a woman to her son, I believe, which states that she will drop his dog off somewhere (a pound? I'm sorry I can't really remember) if he doesn't come and fetch it. Max says something like, "Who gives away a dog?"

Top Dog boss Stump Grinder is apparently a eunuch and I think there is some suggestive dialogue, i.e. "snip snip" I just don't remember and have to go with what I saw in a reddit comment.

The dog can be used to detect mines in minefields. It barks to alert you when it detects a mine, and it whines and cries when you are close to a mine. The noise may be a bit distressing.
