At a manor with a mysterious history, the 8 members of the Midnight Club meet each night at midnight to tell sinister stories – and to look for signs of the supernatural from the beyond.
This tv show contains 82 potentially triggering events.
Some of the stories the kids tell are schlocky horror stories. One includes a teenage serial killer who targets girls his age and we see him murder them, as well as seeing their injured ghosts after.
There is underage drinking at a party scene in the first episode and there is mild underage drinking throughout the rest of the series - at most you only see people taking a few sips
No, but at about 42 mins in there’s a jump scare with a black cat that screams. If you’re like me and hate that sound, just mute it, nothing happens to the cat.
This show is NOT AT ALL SAFE FOR PPL WHO CAN’T WATCH SELF HARM!! In episode 2 there is graphic self harm (VERY GRAPHIC CUTTING AND STABBING OF THEMSELF), then I think it’s calms down a bit, but starting in (I believe) episode 6, there is an excessive amount of self harm. People slicing their hands and things like that. Episode 9 is also very graphic with lots of cutting and people vomiting blood
The actual amputation isn’t shown, but Anya has one leg and mostly uses a wheelchair to get around. (It’s implied that the amputation was an initial attempt to treat/stop her bone cancer, which didn’t take.)
In ep 3, during Kevin’s story, when Dusty sneaks into the girl’s house, he bashes her head in with a hammer. Not seen, there is a towel over her head. But she returns later to haunt him with the wound on her head and a swollen eye
Episode 8, someone attempts suicide by leaving a car in a garage, but ultimately backs out right before it’s too late, though it is revealed in dialogue that she was actually recessatated by a family member.
In episode 3 a character smashes another character's head with a hammer. It's done through a towel so you don't see anything but later in the story you see her and it's clear the blow made her lose an eye.
Ilonka's foster mother is dead when the show starts. Another character references their parents' death and briefly discusses their manor of death (car crash). A parent is killed during the conclusion of the Dusty Story.
Not technically cheating — but was into a girl while in a relationship (kind of flirting?). Stayed in the relationship for awhile, eventually left gf for the other girl (after being convinced).
EP1 safe, EP2 happens with 27 minutes left in the episode no visual just audio and you see someone kneeling over the toilet but not vomiting, EP3 safe, EP4 happens with 28 minutes left in the episode (audio and it goes on for kind of a while and at 27 minutes and 40 secs left there is someone kneeling over the toilet AND THATS WHEN IT ENDS!!), EP5 just mute the beginning of the episode and turn away because it’s graphic but it’s like within the first 5 minutes, EP9…well idk how to not spoil this but like just be prepared to mute when Dr. Stanton jumps out. Like as soon as she does mute and turn away it’s pretty graphic
In the fictional story "Gimme A Kiss" in Episode 4 two high school boys make out, one writes about it in his journal and another character then prints out the pages and distributes them all over high school.
The story centers around a teen hospice. Within the first half of episode 1 the main character is diagnosed with cancer, goes through treatment, and is told the cancer is terminal.
Character cuts wrist with a knife at 41:30 in episode 2. She then cuts her arm and leg several times and stabs herself through the hand. It ends at 42:30. In the same episode, at 42:50, a character burns themself with a lighter. The scene ends in a few seconds.
It will depend on how you think about addiction and addicts, but worth mentioning, I think… There’s a reference to a past event where an addict acts out somewhat aggressively towards a friend who was trying to help her get clean. She chucks something heavy at him.
Also, there’s some (arguable) mental illness metaphors in the scary stories. The Dusty story in particular involves a serial killer who could be interpreted as mentally ill and experiencing psychosis/hallucinations… Although the implication is that Dusty’s visions are supernatural and real, (spoilers) he is declared “insane” at the end and in put in a mental institution. (/spoilers)
In E4, terminally ill characters talk about having to wear makeup just to look like themselves, missing the the parts of their bodies that the illness takes (like their hair) and just generally not recognizing themselves as their illness progresses.
Natsuki’s story in S1E8 heavily involves suicide. Attempted suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning (car exhaust) is shown. Depression and suicidal ideation is discussed. (Spoilers) The character does not die. (/spoilers)
No actual slurs are spoken but homophobia and religious condemnation of the LGBTQ community —particularly those with HIV/AIDS in the 80/90s— is heavily discussed. One teenaged main character (who is dying from HIV) has been disowned by his mother.
Throughout the series, the kids talk about being subjected to discrimination, othering, micro-aggressions and pity because of their respective conditions. Especially in episode 4, the kids joke about the phrase “so brave” and being constantly compared to their peer’s grandparents, older relatives and even dead pets.
(SPOILERS) Just clarifying that although Spence is considered terminal when the first season takes place (1994), he is still alive at the end of the series. Also, based on the timeline for breakthroughs in HIV/AIDS treatment (protease inhibitors were approved in 1995) it’s entirely possible that he will live for a long while yet.
Depends on what the definition of a sad ending is. Most characters are terminally ill and are going to die. But they have started to find peace with their fate.
Mike Flanagan has confirmed that in Season 2 four characters would have died, one would have not been terminal anymore and survive, one would still be alive and at the hospice at the end of the show.
- When the characters die, they would have been comforted by a personified death
- Two characters are soulmates who have already found each other in several lives and find each other again in the next ones
- The characters live on in their loved ones' memories and the stories of the future Midnight Club members
*THIS IS A NO-SPOILER GUIDE WITH ONLY TIMESTAMPS NOT WHAT SCENES TO WATCH OUT FOR*
In ep 2 the character will narrate something like “so she grabbed a gun.” After that, in a few minutes there will be the SOUND of a gunshot. It is only heard and not pictured. In ep 4 with 15:53 left in the episode a character pulls out a gun and fires it (gunshot noise heard but off screen). Also in ep 4 VERY OUT OF THE BLUE there is a gunshot on screen when there is 13:36 left in the episode. With 12:06 left there is a replay of that same gunshot but it’s quieter. With 10:20 left there is another gunshot but it happens at the same time as a thunderclap so I didn’t even notice it until I replayed it. In EP7 with 31:14 left in the show there will be a gunshot after a few seconds. Also in EP7 with 30:11 left in the episode there will be a gunshot after a few seconds.
