F for Fake
Movie • 1973 • Documentary
ReportDocuments the lives of infamous fakers Elmyr de Hory and Clifford Irving. De Hory, who later committed suicide to avoid more prison time, made his name by selling forged works of art by painters like Picasso and Matisse. Irving was infamous for writing a fake autobiography of Howard Hughes. Welles moves between documentary and fiction as he examines the fundamental elements of fraud and the people who commit fraud at the expense of others.

In describing the fallout from his "War of the Worlds" radio hoax, Welles says there was a very distressed woman who showed up at a police station with her clothes torn and claimed to have been "repeatedly attacked" by Martians.

Toward the beginning and toward the end of the film, there are two extended sequences of the same woman being sexually objectified by the camera and by men in public. Just long sequences of her walking and men staring while the camera focuses on her legs or butt. Honestly, the first sequence goes on long enough, and is edited in such a way, it becomes more about abstract shape and color, which made it bother me less.

Yes, a few brief shots of a topless woman, or of her nude from behind, at a couple of different points in the movie.

It's basically a film essay, so Welles talks directly to the camera a lot.

A little, or at least discussed by Welles.

Loads of lies. I'm undecided whether any of them meet the threshold of gaslighting.

Kind of in the sense that you don't know when or whether the film is lying to you.
